He studies Adams, a man of honesty and wisdom, so we might learn his story, and then delight in his triumph. The book begins in medias res with a sketch of Adams as he rides to the First Continental Congress, and then narrates chronologically from birth to the grave over a ninety-one year lifetime. Son of a deacon, Adams had neither the family fortune of Thomas Jefferson nor the elegant homestead of John Hancock to match his ambition. His father sensed the precocious boy’s promise and sent him to Harvard to become a minister. Adams returned with a passion for politics and literature, but searched for grounding until he finally settled on a career in law and married Abigail Smith. As anti-British sentiment swelled in the 1760s, he attained distinction as an honest, though unpopular protector of human liberties when he defended the British troops responsible for the Boston Massacre. But Adams achieved true greatness as an eloquent, stubborn advocate of independence in the Continental Congress, and as an architect, along with Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, of the Declaration of Independence.

Unable to get the British to begin peace negotiations, in January 1781 Adams moved to Holland as Minister to the Netherlands. Ironically, Britain declared war on Holland in December 1780 on the pretext that the Dutch were contemplating a treaty with the rebellious Americans. Adams hoped to use British belligerence and the republican traditions of the United Provinces for the patriot cause, but he soon found that Dutch commercial interests outweighed support for American independence. The Dutch carried on a profitable contraband trade with the 13 States from their holdings in the West Indies. An alliance with America would imperil that trade, since British sea power could easily disrupt it. Furthermore, Willem V, the Stadholder of the United Province, was an Anglophile and close relative of George III. It took Adams many months of frustration, but he managed to negotiate a loan from Dutch bankers for the virtually bankrupt United States, and in April 1782, he finally won Dutch recognition of American independence.

He also sued the nation's five largest power companies for spewing the greenhouse gases responsible for global warming, and he will soon be going to court to stop automakers from blocking a new clean-car law in California. All told, the organization currently has more than 200 lawsuits pending against polluters. "NRDC represents the gold standard," says Eric Schaeffer, former head of law enforcement at the Environmental Protection Agency. "Their attorneys rival the sharpest minds in the EPA and are defending public health right now in a way that officials under the Bush regime can't." At seventy-two, Adams is a white-haired, button-down attorney who comes across as mild-mannered and unflappable. But he can display a mean bark in the courtroom, as well as an impeccable command of the facts. A crackerjack strategist who co-founded NRDC in 1970, he promptly made a name for the organization by playing a key role in writing the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. NRDC now boasts more than a million members, an annual budget of $60 million and a more powerful climate arm than any other environmental group. In his thirty-five years of shaping NRDC's legal tactics, Adams says, he has never seen a more worthy target than the Bush administration: "Their denial is stupefying. He replaced Washington's cabinet which consisted of Edmund Randolph, Alexander Hamilton, Henry Knox, and William Bradford. Timothy Pickering of Massachusetts was appointed the secretary of state, Oliver Welcott of Connecticut became the secretary of treasury, James McHenry of Maryland became the secretary of war, and Charles Lee of Virginia was appointed the attorney general. It is quite obvious that George Washington had a much better cabinet than Adams did. John Adam's cabinet was not nearly as witty or as intelligent than the one of Washington. Obviously, Mr. Adams did not do too good of a job on choosing his colleagues. In 1798, President Adams signed into law the Alien and Sedition Acts. These acts were four bills which were designed to crush the opposition. The Naturalization Act made it more difficult for immigrants to become citizens. It raised the amount of years required for naturalization from four to fifteen. This act was repealed in 1802. The Alien Act empowered the president to arrest and deport any alien who is considered to be dangerous. This act expired in 1800. The Alien Enemies Act was directed at French immigrants. It authorized the president to round up and imprison enemy aliens during war time. This act expired in 1801. The Naturalization and Alien Acts were aimed largely at Irish immigrants and French refugees who had participated in political activities critical to the Adams administration. In a severe blow to the freedom of the press, the sedition act threatened with fine and imprisonment anyone who "shall write, print, utter or publish...scandalous and malicious writing or writings against the government of the government of the United States, or either House of the Congress...or the President...with intent to defame...or to bring them...into contempt or disrepute; or to excite against them...the hatred of the good people of the United States."
