Music | Gil Shaham/Jian Wang/Claudio Abbado/Berlin Philharmonic BRAHMS VIOLIN CONCERTO/DOUBLE CONCERTO (DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON) Stars graphics (gil shaham performs with guitarist Göran Söllscher next Friday, April 11, http://www.bostonphoenix.com/boston/music/otr/documents/02793224.htm
Extractions: This is an outstanding disc. Shaham and Abbado pair up for one of the most insightful and beautifully executed recordings of the Violin Concerto to appear in recent memory. Shaham possesses a flawless technique, but even more impressive is his phrasing, which is oriented to the long line and never sounds foursquare. He also wields a vast dynamic range, his playing sometimes so quiet that it only just floats above the orchestral texture, giving the whole thing a true sense of collaboration. In the Double Concerto, Shaham and cellist Wang play off each other more than they blend, and that creates an edge of tension. Wang may not be as well known as Shaham, but his playing is muscular, though his tone is can be a little wiry. Abbado for his part turns in top-notch accompaniments that will surprise no one familiar with the Brahms symphonies he recorded in the early 90s. He follows the letter of the score scrupulously, yet he always seems to know when to give the music some breathing room. Balances are perfect, and tempos are generally swift, so the second movements famous oboe melody beautifully played by Albrecht Mayer comes off as songlike rather than sappy. The BPOs playing has a richness and depth especially in the strings thats well known from live performances but doesnt always come through in recordings. Essential listening for all Brahms lovers.

Extractions: Main My God. I don't care what sort of music you like, I dare anyone to suggest a better place (in Singapore) to have been earlier tonight than the Esplanade concert hall listening to Gil Shaham's Stradivarius sing. I have a tendency to drift off during classical music performances (including my own , back in the day) but tonight I was transfixed. I have never heard such wonderful sound while sitting in such cheap seats. I have never heard the Singapore Symphony Orchestra sound so good. I have never seen anyone play two violin concertos (Butterfly Lovers, and the Tchaikovsky) in the same concert, or any performance as virtuosic as this was. I've never even been in the same concert hall as a Stradivarius, which is a fucking cool first all by itself. I want to write more, but I honestly can't describe how amazing it always feels to hear notes I have loved for years, mostly on old Naxos recordings, suddenly reborn in the expanse of this beautiful concert hall, in the capable hands of a master performer. Over the past year, the Esplanade music venues have basically become my favourite places in Singapore, period. Every event I have attended has delivered top quality music for an affordable price, and more importantly if you know me, every event I have attended has been two or three hours where Singapore is beautiful and I love Singapore. Then, of course, I get horned unnecessarily by some twat while driving out of the Esplanade car park, and I hate this place again. But then I go home and my kitten comes running out mewing and overwhelming my ankles with fuzzy friction until I pick it up. And Alec will be here in a month. And everything is okay and will be okay.

Extractions: When I got home and put it in my stereo I was immediately blown away by the ferocious, virtuosic playing on the first track, "the Devil's Dance" by John Williams. As I listened further, I found myself lost in the incredible arrangements of familiar movie tunes. For example, the "Transylvanian Lullaby" from the Mel Brooks movie "Young Frankenstein" mad me want to laugh and cry at the same time while listening. As a final preview of the music on the album, I would like to speak of the horrific intensity with which Saint-Saens' "Danse Macabre" is played. The fast tempo taken in the piece is faster than usual but is so terrifying in Shaham's interpretation that it is definitely worth listening too.
