Separated by two centuries and many stylistic transformations, the works in this program share a common achievement: beauty of musical thought and sound, from the uncomplicated, open simplicity of Mozart to the sophisticated and technically demanding imagination of Prokofiev. Mozartâs three polished sonatas were written in 1778, when the composer was barely in his 20s. They exemplify the classic grace for which he is renowned, yet a disturbing note enters with the E-Minor Sonataâwritten at time when, during a trip to Paris, Mozartâs mother died. That disturbing quality runs through much of Prokofievâs famous Sonata in F Minor, which, though an offshoot of the classical sonata that Mozart helped to codify, unleashes the expressionist angst of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Extractions: Gil Shaham : I guess there's a little bit of a back story. I had played the Brahms concerto with Maestro Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic a couple of years before, and it was part of a larger project. I guess they were doing a Brahms cycle for many years, recording all of the orchestral works the symphonies, the serenades and we were doing the violin concerto and the double concerto for violin and cello. We did the violin concerto, and I guess, for me, it was really like a dream come true. Such a first-class, top-notch orchestra, and Maestro Abbado is somebody I've always admired, somebody I've always loved to work with. We recorded the violin concerto, and I remember that afterwards he had a very scary illness and we didn't know if we would continue, and he pulled out of it heroically and a couple of years later we did the double concerto. This was actually his final tour with the orchestra, and so I was very honored and happy to be a part of that tour, and especially that concert in Palermo. I guess that's kind of how it came about.
Extractions: Performed in a different European city each year, the incomparable Berlin Philharmonic's annual Europakonzert commemorates the orchestra's 1882 founding while celebrating the cultural life of the European community. From the elegant Teatro Massimo opera house in Palermo, Sicily, the 2002 concert features sensational violinist Gil Shaham joining conductor Claudio Abbado in a performance of Johannes Brahms 's "Symphony No. 9, From the New World," as well as the dramatic overture to Giuseppe Verdi 's "Sicilian Vespers." And, leaving the opera house on an intermission stroll, GREAT PERFORMANCES offers viewers a tour of Palermo, showcasing the glorious architecture, lively markets, and musical heritage that have made it one of Italy's most vibrant cities. Maestro Abbado led the Berlin Philharmonic as they inaugurated the Europakonzert series at Prague's Smetana Hall in 1991, so it seems fitting that he has chosen this Europakonzert, in his native Italy, for his last televised concert as the principal conductor and artistic director of the orchestra. N ovember 2003: Henry Doktorski appeared as guest accordionist with violinist Gil Shaham and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in two performances of Carlos Gardel's Por Una Cabeza arranged by John Williams. The concerts, on November 28 and 29, 2003 at the Heinz Center for the Performing Arts in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, were conducted by PSO music director Mariss Jansons. Composed in 1935 by the great French-born Argentinean tango composer, singer and actor, Carlos Gardel (1890-1935), Por Una Cabeza bemoans the composer's lack of fortune, both in wagering on horses and love. This sensuous tango was featured in Gardel's 1935 film, Tango Bar, released three months before his tragic and untimely death in a plane crash. Nearly a half-century later, Por Una Cabeza became famous by its performance in the 1992 Hollywood film, Scent of a Woman

Extractions: Daily Bruin Contributor Violinist Gil Shaham thinks luck is what kept him from playing on any street corners to pay rent. But his natural ability to manipulate a violin bow has just as much shaped what is a prestigious repertoire. But in making waves in the musical scene since age 10, Shaham has more than just luck he has a discipline which has enabled him to skip over this "stepping stone" in the life of a musician. Shaham compares his musical discipline, coupled with its prestige and difficulty, to the job of an actor. "I guess what we do is we're sort of like actors. We get a script and we try to bring it to life for an audience," Shaham said in a recent phone interview.

French Culture | Music | Faure/Shaham CD Contest violinist gil shaham fulfills a longheld dream of paying tribute to one of hisfavorite composers, Gabriel Fauré, with the release on Oct. 7, 2003, http://www.frenchculture.org/music/events/03shahamfaurecdcont.html
Extractions: About this Recording "The Fauré Album," available on Shaham's own Canary Classics label ("Canar" is the Hebrew word for "violinist") in association with Vanguard Classics, features the Grammy Award-winning violinist, long-time recital partner pianist Akira Eguchi, and cellist Brinton Smith in performances of the composer's early Sonata No. 1 in A Major for Violin and Piano, the late Trio for Piano, Cello and Violin, and nine short works including the popular "Après un rêve" ("After A Dream") in a transcription for trio by Akira Eguchi. Shaham views Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) as the "unsung hero" of French music, a modest master whose works - particularly the chamber music - and personality are still greatly misunderstood and underappreciated despite the popularity of works like the Requiem. Shaham comments: "I've loved Fauré's music since the first time I heard it. It's an unmistakable voice: elegant and tender, conveying the subtlest emotion, and yet very passionate and at times intense. I'd like to think that this album will draw attention to one of classical music's unsung heroes and help new listeners discover the timeless beauty of his creations."
