Extractions: Partly as an homage to the 60's Fluxus art movement, violinist Tom Chiu founded the FLUX Quartet in 1996 with a quest similar to some of the original Fluxus artists: a search for a living art for all people with an embracing "anything-goes" spirit. To that end, FLUX has always been committed to projects of unique vision that defy aesthetic categorizations. One such project is Morton Feldman's String Quartet No. 2. Lasting more than six continuous hours, it was "a disorienting, transfixing experience that repeatedly approached and touched the sublime." (Alex Ross, The New Yorker) Ms. Bennett is known as an extremely gifted exponent of contemporary music. Her extensive repertoire includes numerous world premieres, many written especially for her. Ensembles with whom she has appeared in modern works include the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the New York New Music Ensemble, Da Camera of Houston, Orchestra X, the Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra,, Dinosaur Annex, the Boston Musica Viva, Collage, the Quarteto Latino-Americano, and the Borromeo, Mendelssohn, and Boston Composers' String Quartets.

Extractions: by Allan Pulker Overview Early Bird For those who pick up WholeNote early, the May 4, 5, 6 weekend is absolutely packed with great music. Friday May 4 is remarkable for variety - The Glass Orchestra at the Music Gallery, Opera Mississauga's Lucia di Lammermoor at Hammerson Hall, The True North Brass in Thornhill, John Tuttle playing Durufl's complete organ works, the Toronto Philharmonia with John McDermott and the Via Salzburg Chamber Orchestra with harpist, Naoko Yoshino. Saturday evening there will be no fewer than seven concerts by orchestras, among other things. And as for Sunday May 6, I counted 17 concerts, so please, just read the listings! Collaborations Reading through the May listings I was reminded of something Jean Ashworth Bartle, artistic director of the Toronto Children's Chorus , said in the story about her in the December 1999 issue of WholeNote: "Conductors and musicians need to be creative in their programming and to work with their community and, very importantly, with other arts organizations." Ms. Ashworth Bartle practises what she preaches - her choir will be co-presenting a concert on May 15 with the Toronto Mendelssohn Youth Choir. Other collaborations in May include the

ROBERT MISSEN ARTISTS - PERFORMING ARTISTS The seiler Strings Chamber Orchestra was founded by violinist mayumi seiler toperform gems of the vast string orchestra repertoire. http://www.missenlink.com/artists/ViaSalzburg.htm
Extractions: ViaSalzburg The Seiler Strings Chamber Orchestra was founded by violinist Mayumi Seiler to perform gems of the vast string orchestra repertoire. The ensemble performs without a conductor and is led from the front desk by Ms. Seiler. The 15 member core orchestra boasts some of Toronto's top professional musicians and the best young talent in a group that played to critical acclaim in its inaugural season. The Globe and Mail has hailed this "elite band of string players", and referred to it as "warm, focussed, and very much in tune", while the Toronto Star lauded its "ebullience"and "glowing tone". Few string orchestras can boast the variety of styles and repertoire that the Seiler Strings play. Each piece and every performance reflects the attention to detail and commitment that is unique to this group. They have quickly been recognized as a dynamic and virtuosic string orchestra that is comfortable in any repertoire. PUBLICITY MATERIALS Artists Website Press Kit Audio Sample Publicity Photos

Message from Mr. Tetsuo Shioguchi, Consul General Dear readers, As mentioned in previous issues of the E-bulletin, Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado undertook an official visit to Canada in celebration of the 75 th anniversary of the Japan-Canada diplomatic relations this year. She arrived in Vancouver on Monday June 7 th and, after having visited Edmonton, Toronto, Kingston and Ottawa, we had the honour of welcoming her to Montreal on June 17 th . She had the occasion to meet several members of the government, business and academic elite as well as members of the Japanese community while travelling to both Montreal and Charlottetown before departing for London on June 21 st Since the beginning of June, I have also had numerous opportunities to meet the members of the Japanese community in Montreal, including members of the Quebec-Japan Business Forum as well as representatives of the Japanese School of Montreal (Hoshuko). The latter counts 67 registered students, a number far smaller than the number of students at Japanese schools in Toronto and Vancouver, but students here in Montreal seem extremely passionate about their studies. I wish them all the best in their future pursuits.
