In the finals, his Sibelius Concerto brought a devoted public to their feet and earned rapturous applause, even charming several violinists from the accompanying Montreal Symphony Orchestra.Yet when jury president André Bourbeau announced the winner of the First Grand Prize (to which the generous sum of $25,000 was attached), Yossif Ivanov seemed surprised. The 16-year-old barely had time to savour his dream before it became a reality. "It was fabulous, absolutely amazing! I never thought I would win!" he blurted out two days later. "Of course, you always hope," he continued in a slightly halting and timid voice, "but so many factors must be considered in the awarding of prizes." In an interview with Eric Friesen on CBC RadioTwo several minutes after that announcement, his enthusiasm was dampened by anxiety over his final exam. A whole new repertoire still needs polishing, the director of the school is "very strict," and will not accept less than perfection.

Vadim Repin Citizen of the World by Edith Eisler Though he started winning major competitions when he was only 11, Repins international reputation was established when he won the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels at the age of 17. His career has flourished ever since, taking him all over the world to perform recitals, chamber music, and concertos with leading orchestras and conductors. His repertoire ranges from Classical to contemporary and he has a large, award-winning discography to his credit. Repin has visited New York many times as soloist with various American and European orchestras. From the first time I heard him, it was clear to me that he was an extraordinary player, and that impression has been confirmed and reinforced by each subsequent appearance as well as by his recordings. He has a spectacular technique, remarkable in its apparently limitless facility and infallible security, and a virtuosos natural flair without a virtuosos mannerisms or exaggerations. His tone is radiantly beautiful, warm, variable, and powerful, and unbroken by instrumental limitations such as changes of bow, string, or position. However, what is most captivating about his playing is his innate feeling for the music, his unerring sense of style, and his irresistible charm. His formidable technical resources are entirely at the service of the composer and he combines respect for the score with a strongly felt personal response to the music, from inward expressiveness to fiery, passionate abandon. I was pleasantly recommended this recording. I have had the opportunity to hear Vadim Repin 'live' in a Shostakovich Violin Concerto a couple of years ago with the SSO and even bought his recording of the Shostakovich No.1 and the Prokofiev No.2 with Kent Nagano conducting (Erato 0630-10696-2). Vadim Repin won the prestigious Wieniawski International Competition at the tender age of 11. Later at 17, he triumphed at the Reine Elisabeth Concours. He studied with Professor Zakhar Bron, said to be one of the foremost Russian violinists since the likes of Heifetz, Oistrakh and Milstein. Repin has worked with conductors the likes of Nagano, Boulez, Marriner and Temirkanov. He has also performed in recitals with Boris Berezovsky (Wow, I would love to hear this twin partnership 'live'), Bella Davidovich and Markovich. He has won the Diapason d'Or Choc du Monde de la Musique Terama, and was highly praised for his recording of the Ravel Sonata No.2 and the Medtner Sonata No.3 "Epica", (with Berezovsky, Erato 0630-15110-2).
Extractions: Beethoven: Symphony No.5 in C minor, Op.67 This concert was launched with a stunningly powerful performance of Shostakovichs first attempt at the symphonic genre. Indeed, Shostakovich was a mere 18 years of age and still under the tutelage of Glazunov at the St. Petersburg Conservatoire when he produced No.1 out of a total of fifteen symphonies that would pepper his compositional career at regular intervals and at key points in his musical development. Throughout the Shostakovich we were treated to a colourful and moving soundscape. The opening movements instrumental exchanges (such as the flute solo translating into a high-register violin trill) were seamless and the barely audible and yet clearly articulated pianissimo ending of the Lento was magical.

Extractions: At first glance, the works chosen by Vadim Repin for this recording appear unrelated and difficult to categorise, and to draw parallels between them may be to risk camouflaging their individual quality. But there is a common historical thread binding nearly all of them, for of the eleven pieces presented, nine were written or arranged by virtuoso violinists. Ponce and Tchaikovsky are the exceptions, being remarkably gifted pianists rather than string players. But in the case of Tchaikovsky Repin stands on familiar soil, sharing as he does his Russian heritage. There are other links, too. Four of the works are sets of variations on a theme, of which two are based on original melodies and two on opera arias by other composers. Three take well-known national dances (a polonaise, a waltz and a zapateado) as their basic musical material. And two of the pieces (Der Erlkonig and La Ronde des lutins) concern themselves with menacing, other-wordly beings.

Born in Siberia in 1971, he started to play violin at the age of five, and six months later had his first stage performance. He was only 11 when he won the gold medal in all age categories in the Wienawski Competition. The same year he gave his recital debuts in Moscow and St Petersburg. In 1985 at fourteen he made his debuts in Tokyo, Munich, Berlin, Helsinki; a year later in Carnegie Hall. The same year, being still too young to take part in the Tchaikovsky competition, he was invited to perform at the opening concert. Two years later Vadim Repin was the youngest ever winner of the most prestigious and demanding violin competition in the world, the Reine Elisabeth Concours. Since then he has appeared with the world's greatest orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, La Scala Milan, the Los Angeles and New York Philharmonic Orchestras, the Orchestre de Paris, the Royal Concertgebouw, San Francisco Symphony, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic.
