Extractions: Eduard Wulfson, artistic director of the international Chateau de Champs Masterclasses for violinists held each summer outside of Paris, has become the Society's first European Director of European Operations. The esteemed violinist and professor, well-known for his coaching of international soloists, last year orchestrated the purchase of the only existent Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù cello, 1731, "Messeas." Shortly thereafter, Wulfson, on behalf of The Stradivari Society, loaned this exceptional instrument to the acclaimed cellist David Geringas. "I am very proud to be the Society's first European patron and first European director of operations," said Wulfson. Acquisition of the del Gesù evolved from Wulfson's great mutual admiration and friendship with Geoffrey Fushi, he explained. "I admire his great achievements with his partner, Robert Bein, as world-leading violin experts and dealers. When Geoffrey mentioned the existence of the unique and superb only existent cello by del Gesù," related Wulfson. "I was so surprised about such a sensational discovery that I asked to see the cello. I immediately fell in love with the wonderful sound and the gorgeous, divine projection of this instrument, as did David," remarked Wulfson, who quickly developed the financial structure to acquire the rare cello.

Extractions: LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC RECEPTION Here was a post-concert party studded with artistic VIPsRussian violin virtuoso Vadim Repin , Los Angeles Philharmonic conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya -, not to mention our own Philharmonic Society executive director, Dean Corey But there was another special guest at the dessert reception honoring society donors that followed the Los Angeles Philharmonic's appearance on April 30 at Segerstrom Hall-a Stradavarius 'Ruby' 1708 violin. And it arrived on the arm of the Siberia-born Repin, who ferried it carefully in what he said was a protective "double suitcase." The rare instrument, loaned to Repin by the Stradavarius Society of Chicago, had responded beautifully to his robust technique as he played Tchkaikovsky's rapturous "Violin Concerto in D Major," and then, after receiving a prolonged standing ovation, encored with Ysaye's Sonata No. 3 for Solo Violin." Would he tuck the priceless instrument under his head and use it for a pillow when he slept that night? "It won't be my pillow, but it won't be far away," he joked as he swept into the party co-sponsored by the Society and K-MOZART 105.1fm, with desserts provided by Gelson’s and Victor Benes Bakeries. Besides accompanying Repin, the orchestra performed Tan Dun's revised version of the "Paper Concerto"originally commissioned by the LA Phil for its first youth concert at the Walt Disney Concert Halland Stravinsky's "Song for the Nightingale." "I particularly enjoyed the 'Paper Concerto' because we had our 8-year-old grandson, Douglas, with us," said Society supporter

Extractions: Nathan Milstein Ragin (RAH-gheen) Wenk-Wolff enjoys an extraordinary career. She began playing the violin at age 11, and started studies with her first professional teacher at age 13. Only one year later, at the age of 14, she performed Mozart's G Major Violin Concerto with her own cadenzas, and since then she has regularly been a soloist with all the Norwegian symphony orchestras, including the Oslo Philharmonic, the Bergen Symphony Orchestra, and the Norwegian Broadcast Orchestra. She received much acclaim for her performance with orchestra of the Vieuxtemps "Ballade & Polonaise" which was broadcast on Norwegian Television and BBC Radio 3 in England. Her remarkable playing and mature and moving interpretation of works such as Mozart's haunting Sinfonia Concertante instantly brought her to the forefront among Norwegian artists. At 17, she made her official debut in Oslo, which caused a sensation, and for which she won the Norwegian Debut Prize. In October 1984 she had her very successful London debut at the Purcell Room (South Bank) and the same month gave a recital in Paris in conjunction with an exhibition of her own drawings.

Extractions: 2 Lawrence Budmen GYPSY FIRE The rich, dark sound of Gluzman's violin (a 1609 Stradivarius once owned by the legendary Russian violinist and teacher Leopold Auer) conjured up the world of Tchaikovsky and the Russian violinistic tradition. Gluzman is the contemporary embodiment of that great Russian school of violin virtuosos that runs from Misha Elman and Jascha Heifetz through Gluzman's contemporaries Maxim Vengerov and Vadim Repin. His blistering performance of Ravel's showpiece received a standing, cheering ovation. And what a performance! (While Tzigane is a Frenchman's impression of Gypsy fiddlers, it remains the work of a master craftsman. Mastery was what Gluzman's rendition was all about.) Gluzman's technique is a given his virtuosity is awesome! His violin ignited a Gypsy flame beneath the music. Gluzman did not give a dutiful performance of the notes. His Tzigane glowed with the inner fire of creative inspiration. Violinist and music became one a transcendent artistic moment! (As an encore, Gluzman offered Fritz Kreisler's more refined Viennese version of Gypsy music La Gitana . Gluzman played this bon-bon with flair and style. Sentiment without bathos exactly the way Kreisler himself played this music.)
