Extractions: Violinist Perhaps the most gifted of all violinists born since WWII, Itzhak Perlman is now in the 6th decade of his professional career with his formidable technique and penetrating interpretive powers intact and flourishing. He has taken up conducting in addition to his annual tours as a violinist and his impressive discography continues to grow. Perlman was a prodigy and was playing with orchestras in Israel by the age of ten. A scholarship allowed him to travel to New York where he studied at the Juilliard School with Ivan Galamian and by 1965, Perlman's international career was well underway. He has played all the major (and many smaller) music capitals in the world and has been an ardent champion of chamber music as well. He has explored his cultural roots in a series of concerts and recordings as a Klezmer violinist and enjoys playing jazz tool. His notable recordings of nearly the entire major violin repertoire are constantly available and the Universal labels have (among others) his fine interpretations of the Beethoven Sonatas with Itzhak Perlman.
Extractions: The award winning virtuoso violinist, Itzhak Perlman, has, inter alia, received 15 Grammy Awards and being honoured with 4 Emmy Awards. In the classical music world of the present era, there exists in Itzhak Perlman some sort of oxymoron: While he is an earnest musician who is being well-respected, he also possesses an infectious charisma. His innate humour blends flawlessly with his pyrotechnics of musical technical perfection and ardour, imparting his performance a singularly novel, refreshing charm. Itzhak Perlman was born in Israel in 1945. Itzhak Perlman completed his initial training at the Academy of Music in Tel Aviv with Rivka Goldgart. In 1963, He gave a rousing performance in the Carnegie Hall. After studying at the Juilliard School, Itzhak Perlman won the prestigious Leventritt Competition in 1964, which began his burgeoning worldwide career. In December 1990, Perlman to participated in a gala performance in Leningrad celebrating the 150th anniversary of Tchaikovsky's birth. This concert, which also featured Yo-Yo Ma, Jessye Norman and Yuri Temirkanov conducting the Leningrad Philharmonic, was televised live in Europe and later broadcast throughout the world and is now available on home video (RCA/BMG Classics). There, he performed Tchaikovsky's lively Valse-Scherzo and gave an utterly spellbinding and mellifluously heart-wrenching rendition of Serenade Melancholique.

(Photo: News-Journal/Craig Litten) That was no surprise since his first appearance in Daytona Beach, for the 1967 Florida International Festival, Perlman has soared to the very heights of virtuosity and, at the same time, celebrity on a broader level. Still, his Central Florida Cultural Endeavors concert brought more to Peabody Auditorium than sheer musical excellence. It offered a remarkable glimpse of an artist's life in music, of Perlman's collaboration with a fellow faculty member at the Juilliard School and of their reverence for their music. The beautifully balanced program opened with a particularly tender, lucid performance of Mozart's Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 21 in E minor. Then it shifted to the more powerful passions of Beethoven's Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 9 in A major ("Kreutzer"), a substantial piece in which fervent, almost fevered passages seemed to melt into elegant whimsy.

Overcoming polio and its crippling effects, Perlman was a distinguished musician in his native Israel prior to entering his teens. He travels around the world performing and teaming with other great musicians and he has brought a new style, individuality and technical ability to classical music and the violin. Itzhak Perlman was born on August 31, 1945 in Tel Aviv, then the largest city in Palestine (a few years later it became the nation of Israel) to Chaim and Shoshana Perlman. His parents, both natives of Poland, had immigrated to Palestine in the mid-1930s before meeting and marrying. Perlman had wanted to be a violinist after hearing a concert performed on the radio when he was a mere three-years-old. His father worked as a barber and bought his young son his first violin from a second-hand shop shortly thereafter for approximately six dollars. P.....

BY LLOYD SCHWARTZ As opposed to the high-powered duo of Evgeny Kissin and James Levine in mid April, it was only half of the most recent Bank of America Celebrity Series chamber-music team who filled Symphony Hall: superstar violinist and late-night raconteur Itzhak Perlman, returning for his 14th Celebrity Series appearance. His excellent partner, Sri Lankan pianist Rohan De Silva, is not a famous soloist but a specialist in "collaborative arts" in other words, an accompanist and one who works with many of the best-known violinists. The problem with celebrity chamber recitals is that the accompanist takes a back seat to the star, even when theyre both playing parts of equal weight. It didnt look promising that the lid on De Silvas piano was almost closed ("short-sticked") for Mozarts Sonata in E minor K.304, which the score calls, as Steven Ledbetters program note pointed out, a work for keyboard "with the accompaniment of a violin," and for Beethovens Kreutzer Sonata, one of the most intricately collaborative works in the chamber-music repertoire.
