Extractions: That is what we decided to blame it on. Gremlins. They caused havoc while we were working 24-7 giving you, our adored readers, our Best of 2005s that we know you wanted oh so much. They seemed so cute, ya know short, fuzzy creatures that liked to say Mogwai in that adorable 1980s sort of way. Plus they kinda helped out around the office typesetting, taking out the trash, finding facts about restaurants and stores, reporting on late-breaking stories. They didnt complain about the long hours and they were really gung-ho. Then someone had to leave some food out after midnight and the gremlins mutated: They got all green and scaly, came into the office intoxicated, devoured unsuspecting salespeople (actually, we liked that), made physical advances on the interns, amused themselves by finding the phone numbers of editorial staff members romantic interests and asking them for rides to some place or another, starting random fires, etc. We got so pissed off at them we even left their names out of the credits. And when they found out, they reacted by coming in with a tape recording of Heigh-Ho from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs , cutting out the lights and .

Extractions: Reviewed by Gerald Carpenter John Biggs' Three Preludes for Clarinet and Piano (1992) led the slate on Friday night, performed with breathtaking clarity and sensitivity by husband and wife David Peck (clarinet) and Edith Orloff (piano). The only Biggs piece in the festival, its position made it a keynote, summarizing a range of the best American musical idioms and composers. Next we heard Soliloquy for Solo Flute (1977) by the festival's Composer in Residence, Bruce Babcock. The piece was diverting, with brief, graceful curlicues and the occasional sustained melody of much charm, all superbly realized by flautist Ann Erwin. Then came three movements from Ingolf Dahl's Divertimento for Viola and Piano (1952), re-composed for marimba and piano by the awesome percussionist Ross Sears, who played it with Orloff. Next, Charles Ives' eccentric Sonata No. 4 for Violin & Piano, "Children's Day at a Camp Meeting." Every march, hymn, "wrong" note, and sudden sobriety was duly burnished by violinist Ella Marie Gray and pianist Meade Crane.

Extractions: Story: A wounded Afghanistan veteran returns to London where he takes up lodgings in Baker Street with a consulting detective. Lestrade takes them to a rooming house in Shoreditch, where one of the Queen's nephews, one of the Great Old Ones, has been murdered and the word 'Rache' scrawled on the wall. Outside the house they encounter a footman who takes them to the palace for a meeting with the Queen. Investigations eventually lead them to a Drury Lane theatre, where the lead actor, and his writer friend, become their chief suspects, and a plan is laid to bring them to justice. NOTE: There is an unnamed landlady of the Baker Street rooms who may or may not be Mrs. Hudson (p.3). The leading lady of the Strand Players whose "voice carried through all the theatre" is, presumably, Irene Adler.

Currently on the faculties of UMass Boston, Northeastern University and the Brookline Music School, Ms. Bardarson traveled to the Czech Republic this fall to record two Beethoven concerti with the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic for Centaur Records. One of the growing breed of new acoustic musicians whose influences span the rich heritages of folk, classical, jazz and world styles, Peter Janson's repertoire is weighted towards original instrumentals that he plays with sensitivity and sophistication. Performing extensively as a solo artist, his fresh, new Fingerstyle Acoustic instrumental guitar music with "vowel chat" (a kind of vocal chant/scat mixture) may best be described by a review of his music from the Taunton Daily Gazette as music "for fans of Windham Hill guitar legends like Will Ackerman, Michael Hedges and other acoustic trailblazers like Leo Kottke and John Fahey."

Extractions: I wasn't going to review this absolutely wonderful evening of vocal chamber music, until I read Andrew Pincus's account in an area paper ( Berkshire Eagle To continue the review of the review: Look at some of the phrases Pincus uses in his extremely superficial run-through: "Love, honor & obey", "poor Frankie plugs the guy dead. No glass ceiling here. Just an equal-opportunity killer". What a clever, witty turn of phrase! And Pincus brings it all down to our vulgar level, so that we will "get it"! Okay, Pincus does say one or two things that made sense, that actually reflected what most of us heard on this night: That long low bass note did seem to go on forever, any breath the singers took was, like, inaudible! As Andy said, awestruck: "How did they hold that note so long?" He might have added that the effect was eerie, reminding me, at least, of some eastern or Slavic sounds, no vibrato, chantlike. But then Pincus has to be a wise guy again, & he introduces one of the more spectacular pieces on the program, "Purple Syllables", by a rather dismissive turn of phrase: "A new piece by a woman based on poetry by a woman". Now there's an insight into the provenance, if not the substance or heart of the work! Maybe, in Andrew Pincus's world, a woman can write about women, while a man, or a group of men, can't? I guess I don't get it! While Pincus does concede that some of these songs are "tart & quirky" (Which is good, right?), they also suffer from "obscurity" &, and, after all, what's with the title, "Purple Syllables"? Whassup wif dat?
