Extractions: Reviewed by Gerald Carpenter John Biggs' Three Preludes for Clarinet and Piano (1992) led the slate on Friday night, performed with breathtaking clarity and sensitivity by husband and wife David Peck (clarinet) and Edith Orloff (piano). The only Biggs piece in the festival, its position made it a keynote, summarizing a range of the best American musical idioms and composers. Next we heard Soliloquy for Solo Flute (1977) by the festival's Composer in Residence, Bruce Babcock. The piece was diverting, with brief, graceful curlicues and the occasional sustained melody of much charm, all superbly realized by flautist Ann Erwin. Then came three movements from Ingolf Dahl's Divertimento for Viola and Piano (1952), re-composed for marimba and piano by the awesome percussionist Ross Sears, who played it with Orloff. Next, Charles Ives' eccentric Sonata No. 4 for Violin & Piano, "Children's Day at a Camp Meeting." Every march, hymn, "wrong" note, and sudden sobriety was duly burnished by violinist Ella Marie Gray and pianist Meade Crane.

She has worked with artists such as Paul McCartney, Boyzone, Eternal, Michael Ball, Jane McDonald, Sarah Brightman, Bjork, Pharaoh Sanders, Milton Nascimento, Manic Street Preachers and Sting with whom she recorded a solo track for the CD 20th Century Blues, released in April 1998. Recent album credits include artists such as Sumi Jo, James Galway, Joni Mitchell, Cliff Richard, Kylie Minogue, Northern Line and Girl Thing. 2001-02 saw albums with Zizi Possi, Michael Civisca, Jose Cura, Slava, Robbie Williams, Westlife, Samantha Mumba, Izzy Cooper and and another wonderful CD for Joni Mitchell. Extractions: I wasn't going to review this absolutely wonderful evening of vocal chamber music, until I read Andrew Pincus's account in an area paper ( Berkshire Eagle To continue the review of the review: Look at some of the phrases Pincus uses in his extremely superficial run-through: "Love, honor & obey", "poor Frankie plugs the guy dead. No glass ceiling here. Just an equal-opportunity killer". What a clever, witty turn of phrase! And Pincus brings it all down to our vulgar level, so that we will "get it"! Okay, Pincus does say one or two things that made sense, that actually reflected what most of us heard on this night: That long low bass note did seem to go on forever, any breath the singers took was, like, inaudible! As Andy said, awestruck: "How did they hold that note so long?" He might have added that the effect was eerie, reminding me, at least, of some eastern or Slavic sounds, no vibrato, chantlike. But then Pincus has to be a wise guy again, & he introduces one of the more spectacular pieces on the program, "Purple Syllables", by a rather dismissive turn of phrase: "A new piece by a woman based on poetry by a woman". Now there's an insight into the provenance, if not the substance or heart of the work! Maybe, in Andrew Pincus's world, a woman can write about women, while a man, or a group of men, can't? I guess I don't get it! While Pincus does concede that some of these songs are "tart & quirky" (Which is good, right?), they also suffer from "obscurity" &, and, after all, what's with the title, "Purple Syllables"? Whassup wif dat?
