Extractions: BOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA With the Tanglewood Festival Chorus. Works by Bartok and Mozart. Anne-Sophie Mutter, soloist. Directed by Seiji Ozawa and John Oliver. Symphony Hall, Feb. 16. By KAI-TEH TAO LAST SATURDAY, the Boston Symphony Orchestra performed an exciting double-header beginning with Bartok's Violin Concerto No. 2 featuring internationally renowned violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter as soloist and concluding with Mozart's Mass in C Minor . Mutter, who has appeared with the Cleveland and Philadelphia orchestras, recently concluded a Far East tour featuring concerto performances with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. In the past, she has recorded various works by the masters with the Vienna Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony. Her recent engagement in Boston marks the beginning of her six-week North American tour. Mutter's interpretation of the work demonstrated a unique virtuosity that reminded one of the great Italian violinist, Paganini. Her command of the quick runs, combined with her ability to keep the piece moving at presto , made the concerto exciting to listen to. At times, it seemed like Mutter was presenting a show of the many different string techniques, ranging from sliding glissandos to sharp staccatos and pizzicatos.

Extractions: This new recording of the Beethoven Concerto is a technical marvel. The gorgeous silken tone Mutter produces at either end of her violins range attests to her mastery of the instrument. Everything is precisely in tune. And Masur has the New Yorkers sounding better than they have in years. The strings have a warm full sound, but he never lets them cover the glow of the brass or the character of the winds. Everything about this recording has a deep, luxuriant sound that you feel almost guilty reveling in. Interpretation is another matter. Mutter will slow down at a cadence or at the top of an upward run, as if to point out all the gorgeous violin playing thats taking place. Target notes are approached with a slide from below, church-choir style. In the Allegro non troppo, she takes so much freedom with the (already slow) tempos that the movement begins to lose its shape. This pushing and pulling is probably meant to make her reading sound searching and profound, but more often than not it just comes off as affected. (And what happened to the pizzicato in the Rondo?) That Masur manages to keep the orchestra with her is a testament to his skill. The same impulses permeate the Romances, albeit less intrusively. Mutter may indeed be a great violinist, but on the evidence of this recording, shes not yet a great musician.

(Point your mouse here to read an article written by the interviewer for The Straits Times, a daily newspaper in Singapore, based on this conversation with Ms Mutter.) This is your second visit to Singapore. So what are your impressions of this country? This country combines modern technology, science of our time, very vital economics, with the roots of tradition. That would of course make Singapore, like Hong Kong, one of the very fascinating cities for Europeans, seeing the leap of the long tradition into the future. One of the reasons why I come back is that music plays such an important role in Singapore and it will more and more in the future, so it's a very interesting new part of my schedule actually to add, other than the usual places I have been working at for the last 20 years.

Extractions: (DG B0004049-02) Violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter has been a forceful advocate for modern music, and she's shown to good advantage in these three works spanning 70 years. The newest one, by Henri Dutilleux, is a dramatic nine-minute exploration, by turns spidery and atmospheric, of implications of a six-note motif. However, the Stravinsky, recorded in 1988 with Paul Sacher and the Philharmonia, is too earnest; the music's wit and dancing playfulness are largely missed. Scott Cantrell More headlines... Extractions: by Jay Nordlinger A s fate had it, the violinists Joshua Bell and Anne-Sophie Mutter gave recitals in New York on consecutive January nights. As fate has also had it, they are about the same age (Bell is thirty-two, Mutter thirty-six), they were famous as teenagers, and they have large and enthusiastic followings. They seem destined to be compared, or at least jointly discussed. cantabile Bell, who enjoyed superb training, has the unteachable: musical judgment, taste. The repertory of the violin is vast, and he can play all of it, with no specialty or deficiency. He recalls a violinist of a past generation, Zino Francescatti, the impeccable Frenchman with the lilting Italian name. Bell, like him, is something better than a violinist: He is a musician. He is also one of the most underrated performers, critically, before the public today, a condition that can hardly last forever. T The second half of the program opened with a work by George Crumb, his Four Nocturnes for Violin and Piano (Night Music II Tzigane Habanera , which she dispatched limply and indifferently.

Extractions: Full Review Wonderful musical moments like those in this boxed set are rare indeed. Anne-Sophie Mutter and Lambert Orkis are without a doubt the perfect duo to perform the greatest violin sonatas by the greatest composer in the history of music. Add that to a beautifully produced set of Deutsche Grammophon cds of the highest standards, and you have recordings that will be a centerpiece of any classical music collection. It is one of the centerpieces of my collection, which means a great deal since it has competition from over 3,500 other classical cds. Writing this review is actually more difficult than I considered it would be, as the main dilemma isnt what to write, but how much. You see, these recordings present the listener so much, that one could write about their offerings for a longer period than most Epinions members would care to read. Therefore, I have decided to discuss the recordings in broader terms, with some references to individual compositions.
Extractions: Brilliant violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter has spent a career studying and mastering the music of Beethoven. In 1998, she embarked on an international concert tour devoted to the composer's violin sonatas. A LIFE WITH BEETHOVEN was filmed at the height of this tour and features one of Mutter's most remarkable performances ever. Aided by the piano playing of Lambert Orkis, Mutter beautifully interprets Beethoven's Violin Sonata No.5 in F Major (aka "The Spring Sonata") and Violin Sonata No.9 in A Major (aka "Kreutzer Sonata.") In addition, the video includes a documentary film which explores Mutter's development as a master violinist.
