Stefan Milenkovicha 21-year-old violinist from the former Yugoslaviaserenaded Reagan at the White House, is a personal friend of Gorbachev and will meet the Pope for the third time next month. Before lunching at the Vatican, however, Milenkovich has local business to attend. A winner of the 1997 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, the Belgrade-born virtuoso makes his New York debut at the 92nd Street Y on Tuesday 14. "Coming from a place like Belgrade, I find that people think of the worst things," Milenkovich says. "I want to prove that something nice can come from that part of the worldnot just war and crisis." Milenkovich began playing the violin when he was three years old; until this year, he studied in his hometown under his father's tutelage. By the time he was 18, he had played over a thousand concerts worldwide, won several international competitions, recorded two CDs and earned a music degree from the University of Belgrade. He's currently enrolled in Juilliard's exclusive Professional Studies program as a student of violin doyenne Dorothy DeLay, instructor to the starsincluding Itzhak Perlman, Gil Shaham and Sarah Chang.
