Music Newsletter (PDF) After a successful visit in 2003, world-renowned violinist Midori returned to North Park in 2004 as part of continued University Residency Program ( see photos "Midori's University Residency Program was an exciting event for North Park's School of Music", said North Park professor of music, Terree Shofner-Emrich. The objective of the residency was to strengthen ties among artists, students, and faculty. Typically an opportunity for students to work with a visiting artist is limited to a single master class; however, in this instance, Midori participated in a wide-range of activities aimed at supporting the University's orchestral and chamber music programs. Midori's schedule for her second visit to North Park included a chamber concert with her longtime accompanist Robert McDonald, two concerti performances with the North Park Symphony Orchestra, a student chamber music workshop and general interdisciplinary workshops with students. "In addition to North Park music student participation in the orchestra", said Shofner-Emrich, "high school musicians from around the Chicago metropolitan area auditioned to also participate in the rehearsals and concert."

Extractions: LOS ANGELES Midori's fingers race firmly up and down the neck of her violin; her slight frame whipsaws with every phrase. Her face shines with sweat, but she is calm and intently focused. The violinist dispatches the devilishly detailed Barber violin concerto with a fierce flourish and then takes a tiny bow. There is no applause. The vast Dorothy Chandler Pavilion is empty. This is, after all, a rehearsal. That fact, however, doesn't alter the intensity with which Midori plays.

"Becoming a violinist, or wanting to be one, was not the focus of my practice," says the 32-year-old, who's known in the classical world simply as Midori. "I played the violin and did not ask further questions about the outcome." Indeed, those who catch her first-ever concert with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at the Mulroy Civic Center's Crouse-Hinds Theater, 411 Montgomery St., will see the living foil of vicariously smothered wonder kids, and an incendiary one. Midori mastered Paganini at age 8, and was recording for Phillips before she was old enough for a learner's permit. But she's perhaps best known for a 1985 performance at the Boston Symphony Orchestra's summer home of Tanglewood that many still refer to as legendary. The New York Times the following day read, 'Girl, 14, Conquers Tanglewood with 3 Violins.'"

The Independent Weekly: Looking Inward they played in Raleigh s Memorial Auditorium before famed violinist midori, a rehearsal of Beethoven s Violin Concerto by midori and the Symphony, http://indyweek.com/durham/2000-04-12/music2.html
Extractions: A few years ago, in a series of articles on music education in the Triangle, we described the new Suzuki violin program for grades K through 4 at R.N. Harris Elementary School in Durham. Last Friday morning, April 7, we heard the great strides the children in this program made, as they played in Raleigh's Memorial Auditorium before famed violinist Midori, in town for a performance with the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra. Before their own concert, the children attended a rehearsal of Beethoven's Violin Concerto by Midori and the Symphony, watching in rapt attention as the conductor, NCSO's Associate Conductor William Henry Curry, worked at bringing all the musical elements together. From the children's excited comments, it was clear how impressed they were, and also how observant, and how much they have learned. "She holds her bow differently than Mr. ... shows us," commented one little girl. April 12, 2000 The concert that evening was a study in contrasts. It opened with a spirited performance of the overture to Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro , but dominating the first half was Paul Hindemith's symphony Mathis der Maler (Mathis the Painter). Unfortunately, the legends that arose 60 years ago over the creation of this great work persist to this day. It is not, as is usually claimed, an expression of protest against the Nazis, but just the opposite, the composition of an artist who wanted to make music instead of politics.

Extractions: A protegé of the late violin teacher Dorothy DeLay at Juilliard School of Music, Midori emerged as a major musical force inspiring a veritable parade of meticulously groomed violinists-in-training. For years, the phrase, "Really, she's the next Midori!" was a kind of mantra among music teachers. The Midori phenomenon was pushed up a notch in 1986 when she broke not one, but two violin strings during a performance with the Boston Symphony at the Tanglewood Music Center, under the baton of Leonard Bernstein. Calm and composed through it all, Midori ended up playing three different violins in that one piece of music, never making a single mistake. The story of that performance became legend before the concert was even over. That was more than 15 years ago.

Extractions: MIDORI has been playing violin for 24 of her 27 years, and performing for 21. Surrounded by music from birth, as her violinist mother Setsu Goto took her to orchestral rehearsals, she soon fell in love with the violin, and began her first lessons on her own tiny instrument at three. Midori studied and practised daily with Setsu and made astonishing progress. At six, she made her concert debut in her native Osaka, Japan performing one of the extremely difficult Paganini Caprices before a delighted audience, and receiving her first standing ovation of many throughout her distinguished career. Two years later, an American friend of Setsu's taped the prodigy playing concertos by Bach, Paganini and Saint-Saens and sent the recording to renowned Juilliard teacher Dorothy DeLay, who was so astonished by the playing she invited Midori to the 1981 Aspen Music Festival . At Aspen, Midori met the virtuoso Pinchas Zukerman, who wept when he heard the tiny child perform a difficult Bartok concerto, and who later became a close friend and mentor. Midori also performed for Miss de Lay at Aspen. Her mature interpretation of the mighty
