The objective of the residency was to strengthen ties among artists, students, and faculty. Typically an opportunity for students to work with a visiting artist is limited to a single master class; however, in this instance, Midori participated in a wide-range of activities aimed at supporting the University's orchestral and chamber music programs. Midori's schedule for her second visit to North Park included a chamber concert with her longtime accompanist Robert McDonald, two concerti performances with the North Park Symphony Orchestra, a student chamber music workshop and general interdisciplinary workshops with students. "In addition to North Park music student participation in the orchestra", said Shofner-Emrich, "high school musicians from around the Chicago metropolitan area auditioned to also participate in the rehearsals and concert."

Last Friday morning, April 7, we heard the great strides the children in this program made, as they played in Raleigh's Memorial Auditorium before famed violinist Midori, in town for a performance with the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra. Before their own concert, the children attended a rehearsal of Beethoven's Violin Concerto by Midori and the Symphony, watching in rapt attention as the conductor, NCSO's Associate Conductor William Henry Curry, worked at bringing all the musical elements together. From the children's excited comments, it was clear how impressed they were, and also how observant, and how much they have learned. "She holds her bow differently than Mr. ... shows us," commented one little girl. April 12, 2000 The concert that evening was a study in contrasts. It opened with a spirited performance of the overture to Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro , but dominating the first half was Paul Hindemith's symphony Mathis der Maler (Mathis the Painter). Surrounded by music from birth, as her violinist mother Setsu Goto took her to orchestral rehearsals, she soon fell in love with the violin, and began her first lessons on her own tiny instrument at three. Midori studied and practised daily with Setsu and made astonishing progress. At six, she made her concert debut in her native Osaka, Japan performing one of the extremely difficult Paganini Caprices before a delighted audience, and receiving her first standing ovation of many throughout her distinguished career.
