The colourful soundscape of the Guarneri was at its most versatile in her handsâ¦Midori created a resonant, Sibelianic earthy atmosphere in the lower registers which was carried into the orchestra. In the wildly virtuosic material of the finale this soloist conjured up a dance of the spirits.â

Extractions: One of the most celebrated figures in the music world, Midori, returns to Cornell April 30 to perform a program of Mozart, Schubert, Prokofiev and Saint-Saens. The 25-year-old Japanese violinist, now in her second decade of an extraordinary international career, will perform with her recital partner and mentor, pianist Robert McDonald. Tickets for the 8:15 p.m. performance in Bailey Hall are available at the Lincoln Hall Ticket Office Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call 255-5144. While her talent and poise were praised following her debut with the New York Philharmonic at age 11, they were never more in evidence than at Tanglewood in 1986, when she was forced to change violins twice during a performance of Leonard Bernstein's "Serenade" because strings broke on both her violin and the replacement violin from the concertmaster. Her performing schedule, balanced between recitals and appearances with the most prestigious symphonic ensembles, annually takes her to the great stages of Europe, North America and the Far East. She last played the Bailey Hall Concert Series in 1992. In the past several years, McDonald has distinguished himself as the recipient of a number of prizes, including the Gold Medal at the Busoni International Piano Competition in Bolonzo, Italy. He has participated at the Marlboro and Caramoor festivals, appeared with the San Francisco and Baltimore symphonies, and has been a frequent recital partner to Isaac Stern and Elmar Olivera.

While shes on tour, violinist Midori draws strength from the unique, unforgettable snore of her dog Franzie. "I think of it frequently on the road," Midori says in her online journal. "It is so calming and peaceful. I listen to it in my imagination, and I, too am calm. Then, the music starts to flow and take over. Out I go on the stage." Midori will no doubt be thinking of Franzie a lot during April as she travels around the United States with pianist Robert McDonald, performing a program of works by Bach, Mozart, Ravel, and Szymanowski. While she's on the road, by the way, Midori's mom is taking care of Franzie. Violinist Leila Josefowicz , a former child prodigy and fashion model, says she's found happiness and a new artistic direction after a long period of anguish and depression. "I'm so much more centered than a few years back, more stable," the Canadian native, who now resides on Manhattan's Upper West Side, told the London

Extractions: Violinist Midori was born in Osaka, Japan, in 1971 and learned to play the violin from her mother, Setsu Goto. In 1982, when Zubin Mehta first heard her play, he was so impressed that he invited her to be a surprise guest soloist for the New York Philharmonic's annual New Year's Eve concert. That night, she received a standing ovation, which helped her to decide to make music her lifetime career. Her violin is a 1734 Guarnerius del Gesu "ex-Huberman," which is on a lifetime loan to her from the Hayashibara Foundation. Ten years ago, Midori started her non-profit organization, , which brings free music instruction programs throughout the school year to thousands of children who need them. Midori has also founded a similar organization in Japan, sponsoring programs for school children, teenagers, and children in hospitals. She recently created a unique series of concerts called "Total Experience," based on the Japanese idea of kizuna, or "human interconnectedness." These appearances were in small towns all over Japan, and involved experimentation with thematic concepts and proactive audience participation. Midori's commitment to education extends beyond her foundation to her work with young violinists in master classes all over the world. This is in addition to lessons with students at the Manhattan School of Music, where Midori became a member of the violin faculty in 2001.

After 1911 it expanded into local theaters and emerged as a non-profit concert series of international artists, open to all. Many of the artists, unknown at the time of their engagement here, have since become legend; some have been relegated to oblivion, but all contributed in some measure to the musical life of Omaha. It has been estimated that in the first 70 years following the change from club to non-profit organization, Tuesday Musical brought 95 percent of the world's greatest artists to Omaha.
