His music is masterfully written, and although his melodies and harmonies often sound imitative, the music embodies the romantic spirit as much as any of his contemporaries. The Violin Concerto is on tap Friday when the Utah Symphony and music director Keith Lockhart host violinist Anne Akiko Meyers in the Deer Valley Amphitheater. "The Bruch concerto is a pretty good staple," Meyers said by phone from Seattle, where she was appearing at the Seattle Chamber Music Society's Summer Festival. "It's an audience favorite."

The Noise Rating Index is a partially-objective measurement of pager and handphone blasts, 9pm and 10pm watch beeps, coughing-during-the-pianissimo-bits, intra-audience conversation and other mind-bogglingly inept noises emitted in the concert hall during actual performance of music. It is measured on a scale of to 5, in increasing annoyance. This review has been kindly sponsored by the Singapore Symphonia Co. Extractions: The Deer Valley Music Festival's second season gets into full swing this week with violinists Anne Akiko Meyers and Dara Morales, Mozart, the Muir Quartet and melodies from Broadway musicals. Stepping forward: Dara Morales has no desire to be a diva. But she will have her turn in the spotlight Wednesday evening. Morales, the Utah Symphony's principal second violinist for just over a year, will solo in Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 3 as this year's Deer Valley Music Festival opens its first full week. "It's a small chance to come out and express my own personality instead of always being in the supportive role," she said. Mozart wrote his five violin concertos in his late teens, while employed as concertmaster in the Archbishop of Salzburg's court orchestra. Morales pointed out he didn't write so much for violin after leaving that job. The concertos have "a very youthful innocence, charm and sweetness and lots of humor," she said. She has known this particular one since she was 13.

They'll play works of Schubert, Schumann and Kreisler ("La Gitana"). The two will be joined in the 8 p.m. main concert by such artists as Amos Yang (cello), Ani Kavafian (violin) and Geraldine Walther (viola) for quartets of Schubert and Brahms. Finally comes one of the most treasured works of the 20th-century chamber repertoire, Olivier Messiaen's "Quartet for the End of Time," with Frank Kowalsky (clarinet), Mark Kaplan (violin), Ronald Thomas (cello) and pianist Yael Weiss. Tickets are in short supply.
Extractions: RSS Strings dominated the Friday concert in the ongoing Seattle Chamber Music Society's Lakeside Festival, where a succession of new players has created a great deal of excitement among concertgoers. The evening got off to a most promising start with a seldom-heard Shostakovich Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano in C Minor (Op. 8). Composed by Shostakovich at 17, this trio usually takes a back seat to the more mature Op. 67 piano trio. The three musicians (violinist Stephen Rose, cellist Amit Peled and pianist Jeremy Denk) made a strong case for the early trio, however, with an air of passionate commitment throughout. Rose and Peled clearly had worked out all the details of interpretation, which was remarkably well-coordinated. Peled, an Israeli-born artist who joined the Peabody Conservatory faculty in 2003 to become one of the youngest cello professors in the U.S., made a particularly strong impression with beautiful, soulful playing of remarkable strength.

Classical Voice Of North Carolina revenge and a work of a manic depressive genius made for a pretty intenseevening under guest conductor Fabio Mechetti with violinist anne akiko meyers. http://www.cvnc.org/reviews/2003/february/Mechetti.html
Extractions: Mechetti and Meyers Lead NCSO on a Wild Ride of Musical Mood Swings by Elizabeth and Joe Kahn Raleigh February 21: The passionate rhythms of Latin America, a composer's revenge and a work of a manic depressive genius made for a pretty intense evening under guest conductor Fabio Mechetti with violinist Anne Akiko Meyers. But it sure worked. Mechetti, who was born in Brazil, introduced the orchestra and audience to the Suite from Alberto Ginastera's Estancia (The Ranch). The ballet describes a single day on a large ranch and tells of a city boy's romance with a ranch girl, the exuberance of the gauchos and the beauty of the landscape. Each movement has its own characteristic rhythm and the music suggests a blend of Stravinsky and De Falla. Mechetti managed to evoke both passion and precision from the orchestra, with its souped up percussion section. But that was only a warm up. A powerful violinist with an instrument to match, Meyers gave a dazzling performance. Unlike most violin concerti, Barber's features the lower register of the instrument and Meyers was superb in her ability to control when to make it sing and when to scrape. Her intensely romantic rendition of the first two movements of Barber's Concerto were well coordinated with the orchestra, with Mechetti controlling the dynamics to keep good balance with the soloist. Perhaps Briselli didn't like the magical tension of denying the violin a full rendition of the second movement theme until the very end, but it's extremely effective. Meyers's and the orchestra's pianissimo ending of the movement was nerve-tingling.
Honolulu Star-Bulletin Features anne akiko meyers mesmerized the audience with what seemed to be a duet being created equal Renowned violinist and model anne akiko meyers glided on http://starbulletin.com/2002/04/09/features/story2.html
Extractions: Special to the Star-Bulletin Not only talented, but beautiful as well so much for everyone being created equal: Renowned violinist and model Anne Akiko Meyers glided on stage Sunday in form-fitting white satin and proceeded to soar through Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto. Meyers played with passion, especially in angular outbursts that set off Barber's famously lyrical melodies. She played the concerto as if it were a duet with maestro Samuel Wong and the Honolulu Symphony, dovetailing into their climaxes, seamlessly sharing lines. In the third movement, a tour de force in perpetual motion, her long fingers fairly flew over the firestorm, and she ended grinning, clearly pleased. Meyers performed on a Vuillaume violin which had an exceptionally large, rich tone reminiscent of mezzo-soprano's throaty lower range. Even Meyers' Vuillaume, however, was occasionally covered by the orchestra; after all, there is only so much one instrument can do when pitted against a full orchestra. Perhaps audiences have been spoiled by carefully mixed recordings. Perhaps some degree of covering is inevitable in live performance; it is certainly preferable to checking climaxes. On Sunday, Meyers and Wong gave Barber's sumptuous climaxes free rein.
