Extractions: -Eric Taver Y ehudi Menuhin had one of the longest and most distinguished careers of any violinist of the twentieth century. The child of recent immigrants, Menuhin was born in New York in 1916. By the age of seven his performance of Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto had found him instant fame. As a teenager he toured throughout the world and was considered one of the greats long before his twentieth birthday. Even in his earliest recordings one can sense deeply passionate responses to the great composers. Though considered a technical master, it is his highly charged emotional playing that set him apart. World War II he played five hundred concerts for Allied troops, and later returned to Germany to play for inmates recently liberated from the concentration camps. This visit to Germany had a profound effect on Menuhin.

Email to a friend The Wilderness Society today joined an international chorus of condolences for the family of renowned violinist and conservationist, Sir Yehudi Menuhin who died on Friday aged 82. Sir Yehudi Menuhin was patron of The Wilderness Society from 1976 until his death. An outspoken critic of the destruction of native forests for woodchipping, Sir Yehudi was particularly passionate in his public defence of the tall eucalypt forests of Tasmania, forests that still remain largely unprotected. Acting Campaign Director for the Wilderness Society, Lyndon Schneiders, commented that "the world is a poorer place through the death of Sir Yehudi. Not only has the global community lost an exceptional musician, but also a committed and passionate conservationist. The Wilderness Society is honoured to have had such a universally respected person as its patron for the past two decades." Comment by Wilderness Society stalwart Geoff Lambert:

Extractions: Obituary: Yehudi Menuhin "Music is a therapy. It is a means of communication far more powerful than words, far more immediate, far more effective." Violinist Yehudi Menuhin, remembered as one of the 20th century's master musicians, died March 12 at a hospital in Berlin, where he was to have conducted the Warsaw Symphony Orchestra before he was taken ill. He was 82. He had pneumonia and died of heart failure, his London office said. Born April 22, 1916, in New York to Russian Jewish parents who emigrated from Palestine, Menuhin was an American citizen and a British subject. He was made a baron Lord Menuhin of Stoke d'Abernon in 1993. Four years after his violin debut at the age of 7 in San Francisco, he played at New York's Carnegie Hall with the New York Symphony Orchestra. A few days before Menuhin's 13th birthday, Albert Einstein followed him backstage after a concert in Berlin and hugged him, exclaiming, "Now I know there is a God in heaven!" By 13, he had already won accolades in Berlin, Paris and London. During World War II, Menuhin gave 500 concerts for U.S. and Allied troops and for Red Cross funds, but he offended many Israelis by performing for Germans in Berlin only two years after the war. He said he did so to further tolerance and "the brotherhood of man."
Extractions: Previous Great news about how well Lauren Lee is doing November 13, Prog, trad and choice in the early education of Yehudi Menuhin I've been reading the autobiography of the late Yehudi Menuhin, Unfinished Journey . He was not only was he a great musician and a most intriguing human being, but he also wrote beautifully, it would seem. The education of someone like the young Menuhin was bound to be interesting, and so it proved. The first thing to be said is that almost from the word go, Menuhin himself was determined to become a violinist. He wasn't pushed into it, still less forced into it, by ambitious parents, although once he had embarked on his course his father and mother ("Aba" and "Imma") backed him to the hilt. No, what happened was that Menuhin saw and heard a violinist in a circus, by the name of Carichiarto. And he saw and heard the "concert master" (that's what they call the leader over there) of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, a man named Louis Persinger. The finger I pointed at Louis Persinger could base its choice on four years that had given me what as many years of college rarely give the graduate: a sense of vocation.
