But what the small wave of Russian -born musicians have brought with them is immeasurable. Starting in the late 1970s, picking up speed around 1990, this mini- Russian Revolution has brought about a dozen high-profile players who have made a tremendous difference in a big cross section of local music groups. They play in the Seattle Symphony, Seattle Opera, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Northwest Sinfonietta and other professional orchestras. They play in important chamber ensembles, from the Seattle Chamber Players and Music of Remembrance to the Odeon String Quartet. They play in and conduct community symphony orchestras. And when there isn't an existing ensemble that fulfills their musical vision, they create one: the internationally renowned Bridge Ensemble, the Seattle Violin Virtuosi, the Seattle Violin Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, the Khorovod choral ensemble. And they teach. In private studios, in music schools, they and some of their spouses (usually also

Extractions: Now in its fourth year, the Music of Remembrance concert series has amassed an impressive record of performances with some of the regions finest musicians and repertoire that is always thought-provoking. If the series, headed by artistic director Mina Miller, did nothing more than present works of composers who died in the Holocaust, that would be a worthy aim - but it does considerably more. On Sunday, for example, the series presented the world premiere of the new "Camp Songs" by Paul Schoenfield, a composer whose jazzy and energetic "Café Music" has already become a contemporary classic. When Schoenfield was commissioned to write "Camp Songs", he and Miller examined death-camp poems found in the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., as likely texts, and the composer decided to set five poems by Aleksander Kulisiewicz (a non-Jewish survivor of the camps, imprisoned for his politics). These are not mournful poems, but angry, sarcastic ones that resonate with mockery and bitter wit. Schoenfield has set them to high-energy music that pulls together ethnic, classical and jazz elements, sometimes recalling Mahlers songs, Kurt Weills ballads and klezmer traditions. Its hard to imagine better interpreters than baritone Erich Parce and mezzo-soprano Julie Mirel, who perform alternate songs and unite in the finale, all with considerable drama and exuberance. The instrumental ensemble (violinist Misha Shmidt, cellist David Tonkonogui, clarinetist Laura DeLuca, double bass Jonathan Green and Miller at the piano) is an equal partner with the soloists; De Lucas superb clarinet really functions as a third human voice.

Extractions: Naxos 8.557016 Young Misha Keylin completes his cycle of the Vieuxtemps Concertos with this release, capping a most successful series. I interviewed this virtuoso in early 2000 for another publication and found him a most engaging and intelligent artist. Here he leads off with Vieuxtemps' most popular Concerto, the Fifth, with its lopsided structure: a dramatic first movement of more than fifteen minutes duration followed by a short Adagio and an even shorter finale, which together last just over five minutes. The young Russian-born, U. S.-based artist's effort here challenges the best recordings in this work, which include that of Heifetz, who dispatches the concerto nearly four minutes faster! Keylin's first movement cadenza is tastefully rendered, balancing virtuosity with a keen sense of drama. His Adagio is lovely and brimming with passion, while the diminutive finale is delightfully bouncy, but also muscular, coming across as a sort of extended coda, rather than a bona fide movement. Extractions: What image does the name "Vieuxtemps" conjure in your mind? With a bit of a question mark hovering over the "x", my mental mischief-maker comes up with "vieux-temps dansant" - "old-time dancing"! No doubt someone will correct my pidgin French, but for the simple purposes of the "Loony Toons" imagery thats near enough for me. Actually, as a mental association it does have its serious side for, in one particular sense, it happens to be quite apposite.
