Archives Review: Basically: Great polish, less spit Technical focus leaves little room for passion or fun in chamber concert 12:11 AM CDT on Monday, July 18, 2005 By SCOTT CANTRELL / The Dallas Morning News Fantaisie for violin and harp is a late work whose sensuous turns of phrase suggest the influence of the much younger Debussy. But the composer better known for his Introduction and Rondo capriccioso for violin and orchestra also gives the violin chances to show off. The piece was suavely served up by violinist Mark Miller and harpist Jill Roberts-Levy. Beethoven's contribution was the D major Violin Sonata (Op. 12), and here Mr. Miller was joined by pianist Shields-Collins Bray in a performance never less than capable, but sometimes no more. Mr. Miller was impressively sure of technique and intonation, but early on he was a little sluggish, and neither he nor Mr. Bray gave full measure to the finale's playfulness. From Dr. Ewazen, a professor at New York's Juilliard School, came a trio for the unlikely combination of trumpet, violin and piano. Not even two different trumpet mutes could entirely overcome built-in balance problems, but a bigger problem is the music's sheer tawdriness. Pleasant enough at first, in a populist way, it ends with a finale that gets my nomination for most irritating piece of music heard all year. The perpetrators were trumpeter Bert Truax, Mr. Miller and Mr. Bray.

Extractions: Edward Elgar Elgar is generally considered England's greatest native-born composer since Henry Purcell. He received his early musical training from his father, a music seller, violinist, and organist of St. George's Roman Catholic church in Worcester. In 1879 he had a few violin lessons in London, but as a composer Elgar was self-taught. In 1885, he succeeded his father as church organist in Worcester and pursued a minor local career, teaching, conducting, and composing. In 1889 he married his student and admirer, Caroline Alice Roberts, whose love and encouragement transformed him; their marriage of three decades coincided with the most creative period of Elgar's life. He became a close friend of the organist of Hereford Cathedral, Dr G R Sinclair, to whom the Te Deum and Benedictus Elgar's association with the Three Choirs Festival began in Worcester in 1878 when he played with the second violins in the Festival Orchestra. In 1881 he was promoted to the first violins. Later he was able to scribble on his Festival Programme, "I played first violin for the sake of the fee as I could obtain no recognition as a composer". In 1899 the Enigma Variations established Elgar as the leading English composer of the day. In 1904, Elgar took up residence at Plas Gwyn, in Hereford, where he composed many of his greatest works, including both

Back to Current Issue Spring 2005 Class Notes Bob Lawther shares news of his involvement in what will be a high-profile medical malpractice suit to be heard in the Ohio Supreme Court. The defendants lawyer was Dr. Kevorkians lawyer in the "right to die" cases. As the Common Pleas Judge, Bob received the court records and a "mountain of briefs," which he read last summer. He then granted a new trial, which was denied by another judge and sent to the Court of Appeals. We hope that Bob can tell us the outcome at reunion, but we all know "the wheels of God (and the high courts) grind exceeding slowly." Extractions: Broadhurst Theater (Broadway) George H. Broadhurst, the Anglo-American dramatist (1866-1952), came to America in 1886. In addition to writing popular plays, he managed theatres in Milwaukee, Baltimore, and San Francisco before he opened his own theatre, the Broadhurst, in association with the Shubert brothers. Located at 235 West Forty-fourth Street, right next door to the Shubert Theatre, the Broadhurst was designed by architect Herbert J. Krapp, one of the major theatre designers of that era. With a seating capacity of 1,155 and a wide auditorium that offered unobstructed views of the stage, the theatre was constructed to house both musicals and straight fare, which it has done successfully for over sixty years.n Sloane. During the run at the Broadhurst, one George Gershwin song, "Some Wonderful Sort of Someone," was interpolated. The Broadhurst had two hits in 1919. Rachel Crothers's "39 East" was a comedy of manners that starred Alison Skipworth, Henry Hull, and Constance Binney. Later in the run "Hull" was replaced by Sidney Blackmer and Binney by a striking young actress named Tallulah Bankhead. On December 30 Jane Cowl scored one of her early successes in a romantic drama called "Smilin' Through," which she coauthored with Allan Langdon Martin. Ms. Cowl played a ghost in some scenes and the ghost's niece in others, serving to confuse critic Alexander Woollcott, who complained that these quick-change tricks belonged more to vaudeville than to the legitimate theatre. But audiences loved Smilin' Through for 175 performances.
