Extractions: I was born in Santa Monica during the middle of post-war dreams, black and white TVs, two-car garages and cocktails at five. No one was a musician in our family, but music was constantly happening as the vinyl perpetually turned. My father and mother kept the volume high and it felt like Keeley Smith, Frank Sinatra, the Andrew Sisters and Mary Martin were part of the Morning family. Late Fifties I saved enough money to buy my own record player! A musical genius! Memorizing every lyric I could keep in my head, I attempted to sing along with Gordon MacRae, Julie Andrews and Glen Yarborough. Attempted. By this time, my family had become involved in ski racing which meant that almost every weekend, our station wagon was crammed with people driving to the mountains for a ski race or training camp. My mother had created little black notebooks filled with hand-written lyrics of her favorite songs. She would distribute these treasures to all her passengers and confidently expect us to sing instead of fight. Group therapy. If my memory serves me well, it worked. Early Sixties The owner of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, Dave McCoy, took us under his wing along with a troop of about twenty other kids. Fantasy ruled. We lived and breathed for being on that mountain. I found a friend, Wendy Allen, who was as obsessive as I was about memorizing lyrics and the two of us almost drove the other ski racers crazy with our incessant singing.

Extractions: strong> October 15, 2002 Esbjrn Svensson Trio CBSO Centre, Birmingham ***** (5-Stars) There are ordinary jazz piano trios and there is E.S.T. - the group led by the Swedish pianist Esbjrn Svensson. Not many trios travel with dedicated lighting and sound engineers, nor take such comprehensive control of their environment, ensuring that their skilful interaction with electronics and with one another is perfectly managed. No other group in the world have such a commanding interaction between the grooves of 21st-century dance and the acoustic jazz-piano tradition. Already a cult in Europe, the only jazz act on the Swedish pop charts, and with an MTV video to their credit, the trio are firm favourites at London's Pizza Express jazz club. Their Birmingham concert opened a national tour that is their most ambitious attempt yet to create a British following beyond Soho. It was clear from the audience response that this highly unorthodox group are already well on their way in the Midlands. At the end of the evening, when Svensson asked for requests from the floor, an informed crowd yelled out names of obscure tracks from his string of past albums on the German ACT label. There was wild applause when someone asked if we might have the entire concert over again.

Extractions: John "Papa" Creach , violinist, b. Beaver Falls, PA, USA. d. Feb. 22, 1994. Perhaps the best known of the violinist of the 'Rock' era is "Papa" John Creach. In 1970, "Papa" was already in his '50s when he first came to the attention of Rock fans becoming a member of the group 'Jefferson Airplane' and the spin-off group 'Hot Tuna', whose members were still in their '20s. "Papa" had already been well known in the Jazz/Blues genre. When the 'Airplane' crashed in 1972, Papa had already started to release some solo albums (on the Grunt Label), and continued to record solo into 1992 ("Papa Blues"), -even though he had again joined the group in 1975 when they reorganized as the 'Jefferson Starship'. He was 76 years of age when Cardiac Arrest caused his demise.

Extractions: Bulletin Staff Writer The Martinsville-Henry County Chamber of Commerce on Thursday withdrew from the Coalition for Economic Progress, an economic development alliance that it helped create. The chamber's unanimous vote followed Martinsville City Council's decision Tuesday to select former mayor Mark Crabtree as the city's representative on the coalition. Several chamber board members said after the meeting that while they had nothing against Crabtree, the appointment showed the city was interested in maintaining the status quo on economic development. Chamber board Chairman Jeb Bassett issued a statement after Thursday's meeting that said, in part, "it became apparent that there was little sense of urgency or willingness to depart from status quo, both of which are necessary to move this community forward." The coalition has been in the works for nearly 90 days, and its board is scheduled to have its first meeting Sept. 29. It was designed to involve the business community in economic development efforts, as well as creating a marketing plan for the area. However, county and city governments "have to operate from certain realms due to being publicly elected officials," Bassett said. They "have regulations they must abide by as far as the use of public funds" for economic development, he said, adding that those regulations can slow the process.

Extractions: H itching down from London, which took a long time considering it was only short hop, we arrived at the campsite early in the afternoon the day before the show. We'd arranged to meet up with a bunch of folks from the Midlands and we supposed that we would find them somehow. It proved surprisingly easy. We were just standing around , having pitched our miserable excuse of a tent, when this blue transit van packed to the gills with Hippies lurched towards, us, horn blaring and lights flashing - it was the Scruvious Piv , grinning fit to bust as usual and as the van shuddered to a halt , the rear doors opened to disgorge The Time Tortoise , Deanne, the Rabbit of Fantasy and a few other coves whose names I've forgotten .
