Extractions: ILana Setapen Ilana Setapen, age 21, from Amarillo, Texas, is an undergraduate violinist at the Thornton School of Music of the University of Southern California as a scholarship student of Robert Lipsett. She is currently the concertmaster of the American Youth Symphony and the USC Thornton Symphony Orchestra in Los Angeles. Ilana has also recently won the position of concertmaster for the Riverside County Philharmonic. Ilana played for three seasons as a member of the Amarillo Symphony, and was the concertmaster of the Texas All State Orchestra in 2001. She was also a recent participant in the New York String Seminar and performed at Carnegie Hall in December of 2003. Ilana has spent four summers at ENCORE School for Strings. She has been asked to attend the National Repertory Orchestra in Breckenridge, CO next summer as concertmaster. The special combination of IU students and their musical mentors, performing under the leadership of acclaimed guest conductors Jaime Laredo (July 3), Erich Kunzel (July 24) and Anne Manson (Aug. 7) will make for exciting summer concerts. Also included in the series is a performance by the Symphony Orchestra with guest conductor Clifford Colnot (free, July 15). Audiences can enjoy Bloomingtons tranquil summer evenings at the outdoor band concerts, which feature programs of marches, popular favorites, solos and light classics. Stephen Pratt (July 9, July 23) and Douglas Stotter and David Woodley (July 16) will conduct the concerts in Jacobs Plaza. Before that, he was the chief music critic for Newsday and New York Newsday (1987-1995) and a regular contributor to The New York Times (1982-1987). He has authored and edited eight books, including The Glenn Gould Reader William Kapell Selected Letters of Virgil Thomson The Diaries of Dawn Powell , and a collection of criticism, Music From The Road: Views and Reviews 1978-1992 . He is presently at work on the first biography of Dawn Powell. Donald Rosenberg is the classical music critic for The Plain Dealer and vice president of the Music Critics Association of North America. His writing has appeared in SYMPHONY Magazine, Opera News Opera (London), Musical America , and other publications. An accomplished French horn player, he has performed at the Aspen and Marlboro music festivals. He is a graduate of the Mannes College of Music (Bachelor of Music degree) and the Yale School of Music (Master of Music and Master of Musical Arts degrees). He was born in New York City and lives in Shaker Heights, Ohio. January 15: Legendary Oboist John Mack John Mack retired from The Cleveland Orchestra in 2001, where he had been principal oboe since 1965. He is the administrative chairman of the woodwind division and head of the oboe department at the Cleveland Institute of Music. A student of Bruno Labate and Harold Gomberg at Juilliard and of Marcel Tabuteau at the Curtis Institute of Music, Mr. Mack performed with the Sadler's Wells Ballet on their United States and Canadian tour in 1951-52. Other former positions include first oboe of the New Orleans Symphony, the National Symphony, the Casals Festivals, Prades and Perpignam. John Mack also serves as chairman of winds at the Blossom Festival School during the summer. In January 1991, Mr. Mack was honored for his twenty-fifth anniversary with The Cleveland Orchestra and performed the world premiere of Ellen Taafe Zwilich's
