Extractions: Abalaye African Dance Ensemble to Perform at GVJHS On April 10, 2002, the Goleta Valley Junior High School PTA will present the Abalaye African Dance Ensemble, a group based in Orange County. Seventh-grade students will attend the cultural arts assembly at 10:40 a.m. and 8th graders will attend the same assembly at 11:35 a.m. Abalaye means "remember your ancestors" in the Yoruba language of Nigeria. This company of dynamic dancers and musicians expertly weaves this important theme throughout their program. Abalaye's performance will focus on the cultures of the Mandingo, Jola, Wolof, and Serer peoples of Senegal, Guinea, and Mali as well as the Yoruba people of Nigeria. During the 2003-2004 Season, Mr. Lockington returns to the orchestras in Indianapolis, Colorado and Kansas City and makes his debut with the Toronto and Syracuse symphonies. He began his career as principal cellist with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. After completing his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Cambridge, he came to the U.S. on a scholarship to Yale University, where he received his Master's degree in cello performance and studied conducting with Otto Werner Mueller. Mr. Lockington was a member of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra and served as assistant principal cellist for three years with the Denver Symphony Orchestra before turning to conducting.

I found this collection in the local book/cd/overpriced coffee bar that the bored, suburban sophisticates down here like to be seen at, modeling the latest in noveau beatnik, heroin-chic. This disc is part of the book/cd series put out by IDG, " for Dummies" (fill in your favourite mind-bender in space provided). Perusing the ugly, stark red-and-black on school-bus yellow graphics, I was prepared to find some really obscure and unwanted performances of the Finnish master's works that were easily re-releaseable, without having to pay royalties, such as Hans Klusenheimer conducting the Karl-Marx-Stadt Sinfonieorkester poorly recorded Iron Curtain stuff from the '60s. Instead, the Sibelius novice is treated to two of the best Sibelius interpreters in all history: From the past, Sir John Barbirolli and his Halle Orchestra, and from the present, current great Mariss Jansons. She was the youngest and first American woman to win the silver medal at the Tchaikovsky Competition, after which she made her Carnegie Hall debut playing the Sibelius Concerto with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Ms. Jenson has toured Australia and Japan and has recently performed with the Louisiana Philharmonic, Colorado Symphony, New Mexico Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, and with the Grand Rapids Symphony in its seventy-fifth anniversary concert in Carnegie Hall. Israeli pianist Aviram Reichert won the bronze medal at the tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1997, only months after being awarded the top prize in the First Dong-A International Piano Competition in Seoul, Korea. Mr. Reichert has performed with the Jerusalem Broadcast Symphony Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Chicago Sinfonietta, National Symphony of the Dominican Republic, Fort Worth Symphony, and Grand Rapids Symphony. "One enjoys getting hot fingers playing it, because it's worth it!" - Joseph Joachim Joachim promptly replied with a marked copy of the part and a letter of his own: "It is a great, sincere joy for me that you are writing a violin concerto (even one in four movements!). I immediately studied what you sent to me, and you will note a few remarks and notes for changes, but without the score, one cannot appreciate it. Most of it can be executed and some parts have a quite original violinistic flair. I cannot say whether everything can be played with ease in a hot concert hall until I have tried out the whole." Brahms incorporated several of Joachim's suggestions into the final version of the score, and rather than providing a cadenza for the first movement, he used one written by Joachim.

Extractions: After the Brahms, Mr. Sandoval rejoined the orchestra to play the 1950 Trumpet Concerto of Soviet composer Alexander Arutunian, an attractive example of post-Prokofiev social realism defeated by ethnicity. The trumpet sounded disconcertingly Andalusian, its jaunty themes suggesting an Armenian bullfight. Mr. Sandoval has a generous way with a phrase, his gestures free but precise, and a love of music shines through everything he does. A benchmark from the maritime genre – Mendelssohn’s "Hebrides" Overture – was inspired by the craggy coast of the Scottish islands by that name. The orchestra treated the work with both delicacy and restraint…The woodwinds were notably expressive throughout, clarinetist Donald Foster’s relaxed fluid solos were quite stunning.
