Extractions: The Bellingham Festival Orchestra is comprised of principal players and members from major European and American orchestras. The 2004 orchestra participants include principal players and members from the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic and the orchestras of Montreal, Philadelphia, Charleston, New Haven, San Francisco, Seattle and Pittsburgh. Our 2004 Principal Players Igor Begelman, clarinet An active educator, Mr. Begelman currently teaches at Brooklyn College and has taught on various occasions at Yale, Juilliard, and the Manhattan School of Music. He has given numerous master classes throughout the United States, including those at the Caramoor and Bowdoin festivals. Equally accomplished as soloist and chamber musician, he performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and has appeared at the festivals of Marlboro, Ravinia, Caramoor, Tucson, Tanglewood, and Schleswig-Holstein. An avid proponent of new music, he has premièred compositions by Anton Kuerti, Alex Krasotov, Meyer Kupferman, Elliot Schwartz, Roland Tec, and a new concerto by Ralph Shapey. Mr. Begelman has been awarded top prizes at the First Carl Nielsen International Clarinet Competition in Denmark and the 53rd Geneva International Competition in Switzerland as well as at the William C. Byrd, Koussevitsky, International Clarinet Society, Heida Hermanns International, Tilden Prize, and Crane New Music competitions. His honors also include receiving the Special Prize at the 41st Munich International Competition and awards from the Altamura/Caruso Foundation and Salon de Virtuosi.
