Regardless of the plantâs age or hardiness, nearly every variety is affected.â So began a 2003 article in the Montreal Gazette on the state of symphonic affairs in North America. At the time, some 47 ensembles were in dire financial straits. Many well-regarded smaller orchestras in the U.S. were on the brink of closing (including the San Antonio and Tulsa symphonies) and even the most venerable and formerly rich ensembles (including two of the so-called âBig Fiveâ orchestras, the New York Philharmonic and the Cleveland Symphony) had to retrench. North of the border, the once-robust Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra had run up a debilitating $3-million deficit and the Toronto Symphony was reeling from a three-fold humiliation: in a cluster of events around the turn of the millennium, the ensemble nearly went bankrupt, the players walked out, as did the conductor, Jukka-Pekka Saraste; for a time, no suitable candidate could be found to take up the baton.
Extractions: Joining Gluzman on the program for this special evening will be a trio composed of Erin Hannigan on the oboe, Greg Hustis on the horn and Edward Neuman on the piano. Hustis and Hannigan are leading members of the Dallas symphony orchestra. These musicians have performed in venues all over North America and also, in the case of Hustis, in Rio de Janeiro. Hustis and Newman also have made recordings of their performances. Pompa-Baldi will be joined by a trio composed of Theodore Arm on the violin, Barbara Hustis on the viola and Jan Simiz on the cello. Together they will play the Schumann Piano Quartet in E Major. Each of these players is well known in the music world, having made names for themselves performing solo and in chamber groups on stages around the world.

Timmothy Baker began studying the violin at the age of ten. Hegraduated from the University of South Carolina in August of 2004 with a BM in Violin Performance. He has held positions as Assistant Concertmaster of the University of South Carolina Symphony and Chamber Orchestras for three consecutive years, and Assistant Principal Second Violin of the South Carolina Philharmonic for two years. He has performed in master classes with Charles Castleman, David Kim, Donald Weilerstein and Vadim Gluzman. His past teachers include Freddie Grace, William Terwilliger, Jerri Lucktenburg and Ryan Kho. In addition, Timmothy enjoys composing and has had several works for string orchestra premiered by groups in South Carolina.
