Extractions: CLEMSON There's no question 24-year-old Vadim Gluzman is a masterful violinist and a rising star in the world of classical music. But it can't hurt his music career to play a 307-year-old Stradivarius violin. Gluzman will play the legendary instrument made in the 1700s by the Italian craftsman Antonio Stradivari during a free recital Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 8 p.m. in the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts at Clemson University. A five-minute audition for legendary conductor Isaac Stern in 1991 launched Gluzman, then 16, on a musical career that has led him to performing as a featured soloist around the world. He has appeared with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the Monte Carlo Philharmonic and the English String Orchestra and is a top prize winner at competitions in the United States and Europe. Gluzman says that with the Stradivarius, which is on loan from the Stradivari Society of Chicago and is worth more than $1 million, he spends less time on technical violin aspects and more time exploring the musical capabilities not available on a lesser instrument.

Extractions: As adjectives go, a word like "best" can be particularly unforgiving. Webster's tells us that it means "excelling all others," which by definition makes the "others," well, not quite good enough. Still, end-of-the-year best-of-the-year lists do help to spotlight those thingsin this case, recordings of string musicthat prove especially noteworthy. But let's clarify one thing: The recording industry issues nearly 26,000 titles each year, including hundreds of string-related CDsorchestral, chamber music, jazz, experimental, world, blues, pop, rock, bluegrass, and heck, even hip-hopthat receive review consideration. Many of those "others" are well-deserving of praise, yet sometimes remain unsung for lack of space in these pages.
