The theme for this year's World Environment Day ( Our Earth - Our Future - Just Save It! ) was an urgent appeal to each and every one of us to renew our pledge to cherish and respect the planet that sustains us. The events began with a welcome party hosted by new Laureate, Global Environmental Action of Japan. Their key role as an advocator of environmental protection and sustainable development in close collaboration with U.N. organizations as been an important force in deepening international dialogue and developing concrete global actions which would contribute to sustainable development. The Prince and Princess of Japan graced their conference, which ran simultaneously with World Environment Day. On June 4th, Mr. Goto of Yasuda Marine and Fire Insurance Company (a 1998 Laureate) funded and hosted a Global 500 Forum Luncheon and presentation. The Minister of the Environment, Mr. Manabe, Dr. Toepher, Executive Director of UNEP, new Laureates, and numerous Japanese Laureates attended the event from 1987 - 1998. It was a joyful reunion for Marilyn Mosley and Global 500 Forum Advisor Partha Sarathay, who has served continuously on the Forum as a counselor for India, President, and advisor. Mr. Goto and his 110 person technical team worked with Forum President Marilyn Mosley to develop a presentation that included a dramatic display of our website. The World Environment Day Ceremony attended by Their Majesties, the Emperor and Empress, was a very memorable occasion. The beauty of Japanese simplicity was evident with an exquisite slide presentation arranged to music of incredible natural beauty. The event culminated with the presentation of UNEP's Global 500 awards to 17 individuals and organizations from 12 countries, all of who have made outstanding contributions to the protection of the environment. We were all so proud of the Laureates as each stepped up to receive the award presented by Mr. Manabe and Mr. Toepher. The youth representative from Japan Junior Eco-Club, Ms. Mizuki Kunugihara, stood with much poise and delivered a lovely speech. The Laureates were honored to meet with their Majesties, the Emperor and Empress, who received the Laureates in private.

Extractions: Everything in the biography of this man is reminiscent of a mosaic. It became a part of Balys, a sort of 'second nature', and not infrequently, something rather mysterious. A natural and distinctive part of his environment was the mosaic of languages: Lithuanian, Russian, German and Yiddish. It was the same for music, which was also like another language, and which included everything from popular tunes to Johann Sebastian. Thus the image of a mosaic would probably be applicable to the portrait of many members of this family - professionally, psychologically, representing their meandering lifestyles, and not infrequently their incomprehensible secrets and improvisations. Following his studies in Liepaja with Latvian composer and organist Alfred Kalnins, in 1920 Balys Dvarionas went to Leipzig where he studied piano at the local conservatory (1920-4), attended lectures at the university, and went to concerts and theatre performances. Apparently Dvarionas wasn't very satisfied with the principles of piano technique as taught by Robert Teichmüller at the conservatory, and one can see from letters written to his sister, that it was only later, when studying with Egon Petri (one of the most celebrated pianists of the last century) in Berlin (1925-6), that he learned to play with the minimum of physical effort. On the other hand, perhaps Teichmüller also had some effect in the formation of his interpretational and stylistic comprehension? For, to the very last years of Dvarionas' life, his piano playing was a joy to listen to.

Unofficially, the winner of the competition attending Neeme Järvis Summer Academy July 5-17 in Parnu, Estonia was Leo McFall of the U.K., a student entering his second year at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Officially, there were five winners, all of whom conducted on an all-Dvorak finalists concert July 16 at Pärnu Concert Hall. The workshop/master course has been held since 2000 in conjunction with Parmas annual David Oistrakh Festival, a three-week culture feast for visitors to Estonias Baltic Sea resort. The finalists were James Lowe (U.K.), associate conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Alexander Mayer (Germany), winner of the 2003 Tokyo International Conducting Competition, McFall, Bohuslav Rattay (Czech Republic), a graduate student of Gustav Meier at the Peabody Institute in the U.S.A. and Kiyotaka Teraoka (Japan), resident conductor of the Osaka Symphony. The winners distinction, a chance to conduct with Järvi on the final Oistrakh Festival concert July 17 at Pärnu Concert Hall, was withheld, apparently more for collegiality than merit. "When there is competition, you feel you have to compete," said Järvi, who made the decision. "It should be more like family." (Time may have been a factor, too, with McFall only able to conduct the dress rehearsal of his work, Smetanas "Moldau.")

Another posse of white boys who have managed to sidestep the Vanilla Ice/Eminem/3rd Bass white-boy-rap stigma (like El-P and the Anticon Collective) by taking classic hip hop and twisting into something new and fresh. But unlike the freaked out, hyper experimental hip hop of Anticon/Def Jux, Non Phixion stay way more true to the old school, with looped strings, simple, straight ahead beats, and hands-in-the-air, catchy sing-along choruses, and tough guy/gangsta lyrics from the three frontmen, Ill Bill, Sabac Red, and Goretex who still manage to imbue their lyrics with vitriol and humor, their unique voices and different flows meshing really well together. Pretty good stuff.
