Extractions: In the early 1950s, at a luncheon meeting of the National Press Club, a slim, sandy-haired man by the name of Leroy Anderson took the stage. As he sat down at the piano, he modestly announced the songs that he had written and would be playing. Even though his name was largely unknown, his compositions were becoming quite popular and well known. After he finished, the audience of newsmen, members of congress, and other government dignitaries wildly applauded his performance. This young man from Boston was considered to be one of the most promising American composers of lighter works that had appeared in a long time (Gilbert 25). Another musician that also had a part on that program, L. Wolfe Gilbert, was intrigued by Leroy Anderson's talent. He described Leroy Anderson as, "a modest, sincere artist, but one who did not take himself seriously. He exuded a quaint New England sense of humor and was not one of those who believed everything he read in his press notices" (25). After that first meeting, Mr. Gilbert became a fan of Leroy Anderson. When Anderson made a trip to the West Coast to conduct at the Hollywood Bowl, Gilbert made sure he was in the audience. Even though this was Leroy Anderson's first appearance, the amphitheatre was filled to capacity. The first half of the concert contained selections from Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Strauss, and Sibelious. Gilbert says that, "he conducted with the assurance and obvious know-how of a seasoned, authoritative artist . . . When he finished conducting

Extractions: The Music: Ida Levin All three works are close to my heart; Diane Walsh and I have loved and performed them for many years. We hope the listener will appreciate the creative range of these composers, all writing within a span of five years and in close physical proximity, yet each in his unique voice. It is only in the slow second movement, Ballada Erwin Schulhoff Sonata for Violin In 1926, when Erwin Schulhoff composed his solo violin sonata, the 32-year-old Jewish Czech composer was a talented artist still establishing his career. He had studied with Reger and Debussy and was moving toward all contemporary idioms, from impressionism and folk music to jazz. Unlike his later works, which reflect the anguish that would torment his life, this early sonata is a sunny, rustic work. The influence of folk music and country fiddle technique is readily apparent throughout. The first movement is a perpetual-motion con fuoco , while the slow movement is lyrical and written in circular form around a recurrent, syncopated motive. The third movement is more fiddle than violin, with much use made of open strings, left-hand pizzicato , and other effects, all producing a lighthearted dance. A more powerful, rhythmically driven dance brings the work to a close.
Celebrities At age seven enescu went to the Vienna Conservatory, and later to Paris, In 1899 he won the first prize for violin at the Paris Conservatory, http://www.students.missouri.edu/~romsa/romania/html/celebrities.html
Extractions: This is by no means the complete list of famous Romanians, but rather a sampling of the names best known outside Romania's borders. Constantin Brâncusi In 1937 and 1938 Brâncusi created a sculptural ensemble in the Romanian town of Targu Jiu. These three important pieces - "The silent Table", "The Gate of the Kiss", and "The Endless Column" - are based on the idea of a "Temple of Meditation" and are a tribute to the Romanian soldiers who died in World War 1. They show the artist's love of Romanian traditional art. The Endless Column, made through the repetition of superimposed symmetrical elements, is inspired by the pillars of Romanian peasant houses, and invites the viewer to extend it into the sky to infinity. Brâncusi's works attracted many great art collectors and presently, most of them can be seen in museums across the United States. Emil Cioran mil Cioran was one of the most celebrated Romanian writers and philosophers of this century. Born in 1911, he graduated from the University of Bucharest in 1932 and became part of a group of enthusiastic and bright people that profoundly influenced the Romanian culture between the two world wars. In 1937 he earned a grant from the french government and left for Paris. Since 1947 he has only written in french. Among his best known works, "Pe culmile disperarii"("In Dire Despair"1934), "Lacrimi si Sfinti"("Tears and Saints"1937), "Precis de decomposition" ("A Manual on Decomposition"1949), "Exercices d'admiration" ("Exercises of Admiration"1985)
