Biography / Romania / George Enescu george enescu has been a musician whose fame extends worldwide to this day. Composer, pianist, and violinist of world renown, enescu, born in 1881, http://www.polymernotes.org/biographies/ROU_bio_enescu.htm
Extractions: George Enescu (1881-1955) George Enescu has been a musician whose fame extends worldwide to this day. Enescu's Romanian Rhapsodies remain among the most important musical works to ever emerge from Romania, and the only works that have ever truly captured the spirit of universal Romanian Culture. He was creator of suites, chamber music, and the "Oedip Rege" (King Oidipus) opera. Composer, pianist, and violinist of world renown, Enescu, born in 1881, studied at the Vienna School of Music, graduating in 1893, when he moved to Paris to continue his musical education. He made his debut in Paris in 1898 with "Poema Românã" (Romanian Poem). Not only a composer and interpret of music, he was also a fine teacher and instructor. His most known student was the late maestro of the violin Yehudi Menuhin. Enescu was professor of music in Paris and Vienna, and in the United States at Harvard and at the University of Illinois. Becoming a member of the Romanian Academy in 1932, Enescu died in Paris in 1955.
ECM the great Romanian composerviolinist george enescu as his central theme, 25 von george enescu. Leonidas Kavakos ist über seinen Lehrer Josef http://www.ecmrecords.com/Press_Reactions/New_Series/1800/Pressreaction_1824.php
Extractions: For his new recital on ECM, Leonidas Kavakos chooses the great Romanian composer-violinist George Enescu as his central theme, the likelihood being that Ravels little-known First Violin Sonata (1897) was inspired by Enescus playing. The musical style mirrors Debussy, a connection well made by Kavakos and his superbly responsive pianist, Péter Nagy. All three remaining works feed off folk roots, Ravels Tzigane taking its lead from Bartók, and Enescus sensuous Third Sonata twisting between major and minor like the folk fiddlers who inspired it. A compelling programme based principally around the figure of Georges Enescu, both as composer and as a performing phenomenon, the latter probably inspiring Ravels Violin Sonata of 1897, a lavish essay redolent of romantic early Debussy. Both Ravel pieces respond handsomely to Leonidas Kavakoss agile and refined approach, Tzigane in particular being meticulously prepared, the partnership with Péter Nagy ensuring clarity in matters of articulation and the pick-up of motives between violin and piano. Indeed I dont thing Ive ever heard a more supportive or more sensitively gauged account of the piano part. These are not showy performances. For although Kavakos is audibly appreciative of the folk flavouring in Enescus Third Sonata, he treats the abstract element as paramount, suggesting keen parallels with the violin sonatas of Bartók. Again Nagy takes the greatest care over such issues as rhythm, texture and the shape of individual phrases: his precise musical thinking could serve as an object lesson in such matters. The graphic Impressions denfance, with its lullaby, caged bird and cuckoo-clock, chirping cricket and ecstatic dawn, is endlessly fascinating, again rich in folk references, the sort that Enescu worked in to his Romainian Rhapsodies. These new performances justify consideration for their warmth, intelligence and superb sound, not to mention ECMs (or maybe Kavakoss) imaginative programming.
