Extractions: The 16th Century castle that sits atop a hill outside Prague, Czech Republic, contains some of the foremost treasures of European culture, including rare musical instruments and historic scores in Beethoven's hand. But during World War II the Nazis raided this palace, as well as several others belonging to the Lobkowicz family, confiscating a priceless collection that was centuries in the making. The remnants of the collection, returned after WWII, are on view at the castle, called Nelahozeves, which recently was turned into a museum. But the family says several precious instruments are missing. The toll includes a 1617 Amati violin that Chicago virtuoso Rachel Barton played for a decade-the same instrument that she carried on the day in 1995 when she was pinned to a Metra train that crushed her legs. This instrument now sits at the center of both a mystery and a dispute. How did it end up in America? And does the Lobkowicz family still have a claim on the instrument? To the Lobkowicz heirs, who are relying on memory and family lore, the violin is rightfully theirs and should be returned immediately. To the Chicago violin dealers who have sold and resold the instrument over the years, the sales are legitimate and they say their documentation proves it.

Extractions: What is it about the string quartet as a form that so captivates the world's greatest composers? We'll find out this week when the celebrated young Borromeo String Quartet surveys its repertoire with all the warmth, virtuosity, and passion it inspires. Beginning with music of Franz Joseph Haydn—the father of the string quartet—the Borromeo gives us the haunting Andante Moderato from Brahms's 2nd quartet, and concludes with Janácek's "Intimate Letters," music that chronicles the 70-year old composer's intense devotion to a much younger woman. Extractions: Cello Concertos. Listening to Pierre Fournier across half a century is like hearing two cellists. In the classical concertos recorded in the early 1950s, such as the newly reissued Cello Concertos recorded by Decca in 1952 and 1953 with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra conducted by Karl Münchinger, he is impervious to and uncurious about the simplest stylistic conventions, even while playing the nominally "original" version of the Haydn. Although Fournier's tone is always gorgeous and his phrasing occasionally poetic, the limitations of his heavy-handed approach would be exposed by comparison with the recordings Maurice Gendron made in 1958 of the Boccherini and Haydn concertos (unaccountably absent from the catalogue). The live performances on the BBC release are a different matter.

Extractions: Sadly, it is more familiar to us today than any of the colorful and dynamic original music of Julián Orbón, the Spanish composer who first transcribed and arranged it. Orbón's parents fled Spain during the bloody Civil War of 1936-39 to settle in Cuba. His father founded the Orbón Conservatory of Music in Havana where son Julián studied violin and composition with José Ardévol, another Spanish émigré. Ardévol had gathered together a group of young composers to form the Grupo de Renovación Musical (Society for Musical Renewal) whose goal was the creation of an authentically Cuban school of composition. Julián was an enthusiastic participant in the group until 1949 when he felt the need to strike out on a more personal and independent path. After studying with Aaron Copland at the Tanglewood Music Center in 1946, Julián directed his father's Conservatory in Havana until 1960. He taught at the National Conservatory in Mexico City from 1960 to 1963, then moved to the U.S. where he settled in New York and taught at Columbia University. Most of Orbón's music is harmonically traditional and somewhat neoclassical in style, often turning to archaic forms and folk music for its structure and materials. His

The New Mexico Symphony Orchestra is the premier symphonic ensemble in the state. Every year NMSO schedules different series of classical music. This year includes the Basically Baroque, Pops Concerts, Special Events like the Nutcracker and Mozart Festival, Symphony Under the Stars and the Classics Series. Beginning last year in September the Classics Series has been showcasing different composers as well as conductors. Nine conductors from around the country are auditioning for the position since David Livingston is no longer the orchestra conductor. The result is conductors playing a specific Classics Series and bringing their interpretation of the composition and their own styles as well. There are nine Classics Series in all; the latest was Classics Series V. Karen Deal who is currently the co-conductor of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra conducted NMSO to play Samuel Barber's, School for Scandal Overture, Barber's Violin Concerto, opus 14, and Petor Tchaikovsky's infamous Symphony No.6 or Pathetique.
