Extractions: Rachel Barton Pine says 'music is what gets us in touch with our humanity.' By MARTIN STEINBERG of The Associated Press Published Sunday, October 10, 2004 NEW YORK - Violinist Rachel Barton Pine is on a quest to spread classical music. She goes on rock stations and plays heavy metal songs on her Guarneri violin, then throws in a little Paganini. She has established a foundation to help disadvantaged youngsters buy instruments and travel to competitions. And her albums often highlight not-so-famous composers whose works are worth knowing. Pine, 29, knows what its like to struggle. She grew up in the working-class Chicago neighborhood of Irving Park/North Center. By 14, she was her familys breadwinner. Six years later, in 1995, she overcame a frightfully close encounter with death - she was run over by a train after the strap of her violin case got caught in a door and she got dragged to the tracks. She lost her left leg above the knee and suffered severe damage to her right leg. She sued Chicagos Metra transportation agency and won a $29.6 million award. Pine was introduced to music at her church at age 3. Using a rented violin, she began taking lessons from a teacher a few blocks from her home.

Barton - Brahms/Joachim Concertos rachel barton, violinist; Chicago Symphony Orch/Carlos Kalmar, cond. American violinist rachel barton already has made a number of fine recordings for http://classicalcdreview.com/barton.html
Extractions: Brahms began composing his violin concerto in 1878 and collaborated with Joachim closely, asking him to "correct it." He also dedicated it to his great friend. Originally the concerto had two middle movements (like the second piano concerto Brahms began composing about the same time), but these were removed and replaced with a new Adagio . Apparently Brahms incorporated most of Joachim's changes in the orchestral part but, surprisingly, considerably fewer of his revisions to the solo violin part. Joachim composed the first movement cadenza; in this recording as an appendix Barton includes her own cadenza as an alternate which easily can be programmed into the performance. Rachel Barton's performances of both works are elegant, technically secure and beautiful in tone. Needless to say, the Chicago Symphony offers superb support under Carlos Kalmar who is principal conductor of Chicago's Grant Park Orchestra and music director of the Oregon Symphony. James Ginsburg produced the recording which was made July 2 and 3, 2002 in Orchestra Hall. Ginsburg and his team have provided splendid, well-balanced, rich sound. Cedille is to be commended for this issue, which offers splendid performances of two major concertos, two CDs for the price of one. Highly Recommended!

All Things Strings: What I've Learned: Find Your Voice, Page 1 By rachel barton Pine. Over the years acclaimed concert violinist and recordingartist rachel barton Pine has amassed a wealth of knowledge. CONCENTRATE. http://www.stringsmagazine.com/article/129/129,3220,Feature-1.asp
Extractions: CONCENTRATE. Many people think putting in hours practicing is what it takes to become a good musician, but just logging the hours without it being good practicing wont get you very far. Americas first great master of the violin, Maud Powell (18671920), wrote a wonderful article on practicing in which she advocated concentration and consistency. Concentration means focusing on what youre doing at the moment, as well as planning your practice sessions and being goal-oriented. When I practice, I like to use the un-American theory of guilty until proven innocent: Treat everything you do with suspicion. Check it allintonation, tone quality, cleanliness, musicalityand dont wait until a mistake gets your attention because you might not catch that mistake. In terms of consistency, practice the same amount of time every day, and pace your practice intelligently. PLAY OTHER STYLES. Learn as much as you can from nonclassical music. So much classical music has been influenced by folk and popular music in terms of rhythm, harmony, and melody. There are lots of folk tunes hidden in Bartók and Dvorák, and a lot of contemporary music incorporates elements of jazz. Learn how to do a little bit of folk playing and listen to the masters of various nonclassical styles. And when you get to a classical piece thats folk- or jazz-influenced, you can really bring it to life much better.
Duos Among Friends At Musicorda Under the brilliant artistic direction of rachel barton Pine, internationallyacclaimed violinist in her first season in this position, the festival is in http://www.inthespotlightinc.org/Reviews/Music_Reviews/duosamongfriends.html
Extractions: This was an excellent program of classical chamber music presented in Chapin Auditorium of Mount Holyoke College, the second concert of the nineteenth season of this festival. Under the brilliant artistic direction of Rachel Barton Pine, internationally acclaimed violinist in her first season in this position, the festival is in good hands. She has brought together an outstanding series with guest artists and faculty drawn both from prior years at Musicorda and from her own professional relationships. The central section consisted of duo works performed to perfection by Rachel Barton Pine, violin, and Yang Liu, violin. These were "Etudes-Caprices, Op 18" by Henryk Wieniawski, "Duos for Two Violins" by Bela Bartok, and "Sonata for Two Violins, Op. 56" by Sergey Prokofiev. Their collaboration was dynamic and inspiring. The final half of the program was presented by a sextet consisting of Rachel Barton Pine and Masuko Ushioda, violin; Csaba Erdelyi and Karen Ritscher, viola; and Anthony Elliott and Denis Brott, cello. They played "Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola in E- flat major" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, in an arrangement composed by Musicorda faculty member and guest artist Csaba Erdelyi. He worked with the original Mozart score and adapted to string instruments parts written for oboe and horn and masterfully transformed the original orchestral work for a string sextet. The performance by the six musicians and the arrangement of Mozart's work provided a wonderful combination.

The season is approaching...and, sore muscles aside, I am once again in training. Believe it or not, attorneys are people too, with passions and pastimes like everyone else. One of mine happens to be participating in this intensely challenging sport. The triathlon is an arduous combination of swimming, biking and long-distance running. The distances vary depending upon the level of competition. It's a sport that demands rigorous training, discipline, pacing and endurance. In fact, it's just been declared an Olympic event. That doesn't mean you can expect to see me on national television. However, I will be participating in several Midwest competitions this year, including my hometown

Ten years later, Barton has battled back and is now a widely admired performer.
