Extractions: Directions: Each passage in this section is followed by a group of questions to be answered on the basis of what is stated or implied in the passage. For some of the questions, more than one of the choices could conceivably answer the question. However, you are to choose the best answer; that is, the response that most accurately and completely answers the question, and blacken the corresponding space on your answer sheet. For the poet Phillis Wheatley, who was brought to colonial New England as a slave in 1761, the formal literary code of eighteenth-century English was thrice removed: by the initial barrier of the unfamiliar English language, by the discrepancy between spoken and literary forms of English, and by the African tradition of oral rather than written verbal art. Wheatley transcended these barriers - she learned the English language and English literary forms so quickly and well that she was composing good poetry in English within a few years of her arrival in New England. Extractions: Daily Cougar Staff Law schools within the United States have been consistently admitting smaller percentages of minorities in comparison to white applicants with the same grade-point averages because of the alleged misuse of the Law School Admission Test, one study says. "Students of color, primarily African-American students, have a significantly lower admission rate, even with affirmative action," said William Kidder, a researcher who conducted the study for Testing for the Public, an educational research organization in Berkeley, Calif. Kidder's findings show the cumulative acceptance rate is 72 percent for Anglo-Americans, 46 percent for African-Americans, 61 percent for Chicanos, 60 percent for Hispanics, 69 percent for Asian-Americans and 62 percent for Native-Americans. The LSAT or the "higher education poll tax" disadvantages minorities because it excludes otherwise qualified minority students, Kidder said.
