Since students can use Andes to solve physics problems on their own, Andes is ideally suited for distance learning The Andes physics tutoring system helps students derive conceptually sound, principle-based solutions to quantitative physics problems. Its user interface approximates a piece of paper in that students can draw diagrams, define variables and enter equations with the same degree of freedom as they would have when using paper. Unlike a piece of paper, Andes tells students whether their entry is correct by turning it red or green. Also, unlike a piece of paper, Andes will give principle-based hints when asked. Andes includes over 300 problems that cover most topics in a standard two-semester trigonometry-based physics course. Several semester-long evaluations of Andes showed that students who did their homework on it have significantly higher exam scores than students who did the same homework problems on paper.
