Extractions: About 2 hours after the deadly Sumatra earthquake, the NASA-CNES satellites Jason-1 and TOPEX/POSEIDON flew over the Bay of Bengal, and their radar altimeters measured the wave height in deep waters. The black line shows the satellite's groundtrack; the blue curve displays the height measured by the Jason-1 altimeter, relative to the average height in previous months. In deep water, the tsunami front displaced water 20" above and 16" below normal. The inset map shows a numerical model simulation of the tsunami wavefront at the time of altimeter measurements, by Kenji Satake (reference below). These two satellites orbit the Earth about 13 times each day, with each subsequent orbit approximately 3,000 kilometers (1,864 miles) to the East of the previous one, so having observations in any given location within two hours of an event like this has a low probability, said JPL's Dr. Philip Callahan, who has been searching for tsunami signals in satellite radar altimeter data since the launch of Topex/Poseidon in 1992. “The fact that Jason captured the tsunami’s signals is serendipitous" he added. Colleagues at CNES-AVISO in France and NOAA-NESDIS independently confirmed the results, and searched for them in the radar altimetry data of the ENVISAT and GFO satellites; the former also shows a distinct but weaker signal, due to its timing.

The members of the Image Analyst subgroup process digital imagery and create scientific visualizations and animations. Analysts process data from robot spacecraft like Voyager, Magellan and Galileo and create planetary science animations as part of NASA's Solar System Visualization Project. They also process data from satellites and Space Shuttle instruments for the study of Earth's resources. Examples of their work include "LA, TheMovie", "Mars, The Movie", and segments of the IMAX films, "Blue Planet" and "Destiny in Space." The programmers in the Technology and Applications Development subgroup design and write visualization and analysis software. This software includes perspective rendering programs, video equipment control programs, and the ACTORS system.
