Extractions: UserPreferences The Experimental Rocket Propulsion Society (ERPS) exists to foster and disseminate knowledge of rocket science, and thereby speed the day when access to space is truly routine. It was founded in February of 1993 to gather interested amateurs in a group that would learn about, design, build, and test liquid fuel rocket engines. Over the next eleven years, the group acquired access to rocket-engine assembly and test facilities and, more important, active members with the skills to make good use of those facilities. We've achieved a number of successes notably, the first repeated amateur launch of the same liquid-fueled vehicle within one 24-hour period. One original goal of the group was to develop vehicles capable of reaching Low Earth Orbit (LEO) in a single stage. That goal has not changed, even though it's taking longer to get there than we expected. The keys to this achievement are lots of building and testing and advancing by increments, rather than giant leaps. To sum up, we are designing and building a series of increasingly capable vehicles, the last of which will reach low Earth orbit. We face many challenges. We think that's one of the things that makes what we're doing worthwhile and fun. If you're interested in helping out (or just interested), read through the Web site to find out what we've doing in more detail. Then show up at a general meeting and volunteer for a job where you think you can make a contribution.

Propulsion means to push forward or drive an object forward. A propulsion system is a machine that produces thrust to push an object forward. On airplanes, thrust is usually generated through some application of Newton's third law of action and reaction. A gas, or working fluid , is accelerated by the engine, and the reaction to this acceleration produces a force on the engine. Extractions: SPDL Electric Propulsion Activities Electric propulsion is most broadly defined as the acceleration of propellants by electrical heating, electric body forces, and/or magnetic body forces. This leads to a natural division of the three forms of electric propulsion. In Electro-Thermal thrusters, the propellant gas is electrically heated and expanded through a nozzle. Common examples include resistojets and arcjets. In Electro-Static thrusters, the propellant is ionized and the resulting ions are accelerated through an electric potential. Common examples include Hall effect and Kaufmann type thrusters. Electro-Magnetic thrusters utilize electric and magnetic body forces to accelerate ions. The most common type of electromagnetic thruster is the magnetoplasmadynamic thruster, or MPD. Electric propulsion technology is steadily improving as our understanding of the physics governing thruster operation increases. Efforts that combine both experimental and theoretical studies of the plasmas within electric propulsion thrusters are necessary in order to build reliable models of performance that can be then used as design tools for improved next generation thrusters. Due to their relatively high specific impulse (500-1,200 sec.) and moderate thrust levels, electro-thermal arcjet thrusters are playing a growing role in satellite propulsion. Existing and planned applications include arcjet thrusters for station-keeping and on-orbit maneuvering. Low power hydrazine arcjets are now in use on the TelStar IV class of communication satellites and the first space test of a high power arcjet for use in orbit raising operations will be launched in 1997 under the Air Force

The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's Special Studies Program (within The Advanced Technology Program (ATP) of O Division) has examined alternative spacecraft propulsion concepts to meet performance or mission objectives. Laser propulsion concepts have been described for several decades. The laser beam is used to heat a propellant with the energetic expansion driving the craft. A series of ATP devised tests were conducted in which a laser beam was directed at a pusher plate with machined paraboloid dimples. Light was focused by each dimple on a spot behind the plate. The focused beam heated air pockets and the expanding pockets imparted a thrust to the plate. This *concept* provides respectable thrust in the atmosphere. In *space* (vacuum) the dimpled plate is jettisoned to expose a block of solid propellant which is ablated by the laser beam to produce thrust.
