Now, the International Council on Nanotechnology (which I serve as an Advisor) has published the first public database of peer-reviewed journal articles examining environmental, health, and safety issues arising from both engineered and incidental nanoparticles ( press release in PDF open access journals Posted in Nanoscale Bulk Technologies Environment, Health, and Safety Posted by Christine Peterson on September 14th, 2005 See the report by Ottilia Saxl, founder and CEO of the Institute of Nanotechnology, UK, for the European Commission Expert Group on Key Technologies for Europe. Titled Nanotechnology â a Key Technology for the Future of Europe (PDF), it includes on pages 26-28 a scenario of the role of nanotech in 2025. The technology will sound familiar, but the political context is quite different from most U.S. nanotech scenarios (emphasis added):

Merkle Further information about self replicating systems is available at http://www.zyvex.com/nanotech/selfRep.html From Foresight Update No. 9, page 4, June 1990; a publication of the Foresight Institute The NASA study on which this article was based is available on the web at: In the summer of 1980, NASA and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) sponsored a summer study by 15 NASA program engineers and 18 educators from U.S. universities to investigate advanced automation for space missions. The resulting 400-page report included a 150-page chapter on "Replicating Systems Concepts: Self-Replicating Lunar Factory and Demonstration" which proposed a 20-year program to develop a self-replicating general purpose lunar manufacturing facility (a Self Replicating System, or SRS) that would be placed on the lunar surface. The design was based entirely on conventional technology. The "seed" for the facility, to be landed on the lunar surface from Earth to start the process, was 100 tons (approximately four Apollo missions). Once this 100-ton seed was in place, all further raw materials would be mined from the lunar surface and processed into the parts required to extend the SRS. A significant advantage of this approach for space exploration would be to reduce or eliminate the need to transport mass from the Earthwhich is relatively expensive.
The New Atlantis - The Nanotechnology Revolution - Adam Keiper Today, in the young field of nanotechnology, scientists and engineers are taking control of Word of the promise of nanotechnology is spreading rapidly, http://www.thenewatlantis.com/archive/2/keiper.htm
Extractions: The Nanotechnology Revolution Adam Keiper he English chemist John Dalton first proposed the scientific theory of the atom two hundred years ago. Since then we have seen chemists come to understand the elements and their interactions, we have seen engineers make and use new materials to improve our lives, we have seen physicists demonstrate that even atoms are divisible, and we have seen warriors unleash the power of the atomic nucleus. In these two centuries we have amassed an enormous understanding ofand wielded an increasing control overthe fundamental units of matter. The Hulk and The Tuxedo ), books (including last years Michael Crichton bestseller, Prey ), video games (such as the Metal Gear Solid series), and television (most notably in various incarnations of Star Trek). Yet there remains a great deal of confusion about just what nanotechnology is, both among the ordinary people whose lives will be changed by the new science, and among the policymakers who wittingly or unwittingly will help steer its course. Unsurprisingly, some of the confusion is actually caused by the increased attentionsensationalistic reporting and creative license have done little to prepare society for the hard decisions that the development of nanotechnology will make necessary.

Nanomedicine may be defined as the monitoring, repair, construction and control of human biological systems at the molecular level, using engineered nanodevices and nanostructures. Basic nanostructured materials, engineered enzymes, and the many products of biotechnology will be enormously useful in near-term medical applications. However, the full promise of nanomedicine is unlikely to arrive until after the development of precisely controlled or programmable medical nanomachines and nanorobots. Such microscopic machines were first hypothesized by the Nobel-winning physicist Richard Feynman in 1959 , and later were described at length by K. Eric Drexler in his popular books Engines of Creation (1986) and Unbounding the Future (1991), and in his more recent technical book
