The goal has been to increase productivity and to increase quality. Among many components, metrology and precision engineering are two essential elements of modern productions as far as product quality is concerned. Particularly, when environmental consciousness is clearly becoming the most important issue of an industrial society, industry is striving for the design and manufacture of efficient and long lasting products. With the support of the National Science Foundation, the Coordinate Metrology and Measurement Laboratory was established at The Ohio State University in 1989. The laboratory's main goal is to advance the state of the art in 3D Coordinate Metrology and Precision Engineering through research aimed at developing the required knowledge and technology for integrated coordinate metrology and dimensional control of precision mechanical parts. The scope of the research ranges from developing concept and algorithms for automated dimensional inspection, and geometric tolerance evaluation, studying error formation of various form shaping processes for dimensional error prediction and compensation, developing integrated 3D coordinate acquisition systems using mechanical probes, laser sensors, and vision systems, implementing computer control algorithms and sensor technology for high-speed/high precision motion control, to developing analysis methodologies and design tools for vibration control.
