Cameron Applied Research Center on the university campus, the Metrology Lab is one of the core facilities of the Center for Precision Metrology . The Metrology Lab is central to the education and research efforts in precision engineering and metrology at UNC-Charlotte, and with the wide variety of high-end measurement instruments, the Metrology Lab also provides measurement services to the University campus and local industry. The approximately 1500 ft facility is a precisely controlled environment that meets class 10,000 clean room requirements, and is temperature controlled to ± 0.1 °C at 20 °C (68 °F). The Lab is also equipped with both passive and active vibration systems capable of isolating and supporting from the smallest instruments to relatively large CMMs. These strict environmental controls are necessary to match the capabilities of the precision measurement instruments housed in the Lab. Precision, on the other hand, is how detailed a measurement is. In the United States, the master reference Standards are maintained through the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). By convention, a Standard is ten times more accurate and precise than the measurement device being tested.
