Extractions: Cities and stadiums Berlin will be a host city for the World Cup seventeen years after the fall of the Wall. The towers of the Cologne Cathedral are visible above the city from far and wide. At a height of 157 meters, it is still only the second tallest building in the city, but the Gothic cathedral is still Cologne's most popular symbol. Dortmund is located in the heart of the Ruhr region. Coal and steel production were once key factors in the local economy. Frankfurt am Mainâs famous skyline has earned the city the nickname "Mainhattan". The skyscrapers of the banks and insurance companies line the bank of the river Main. Soccer reigns supreme in Gelsenkirchen. There are very few cities that are so closely identified with their football club as is the case here with FC Schalke 04.

July 20, 2005 Publicly Subsidizing Stadiums Is Foolish By John If the wealthy owners of sports teams want new stadiums, let them build them withtheir Study after study finds stadiums cost far more than they return. http://www.realclearpolitics.com/Commentary/com-7_20_05_JS.html
Extractions: By John Stossel Politicians want to build palaces for rich people. OK, they're not palaces they're sports stadiums but the difference is subtle. In recent years, New York politicians have talked about a football stadium, a basketball arena, and two new baseball stadiums. All four projects would require financial help from the government, for the stadiums, nearby facilities, or both. Why? Why should they get our money? If the wealthy owners of sports teams want new stadiums, let them build them with their own money. They're not entitled to our money. Just as cities take people's homes so rich corporations can do what the politicians call "urban renewal," telling the courts economic development is a "public use," sports tycoons argue their stadiums are in the "public interest." Their politician friends tell voters that a stadium will "bring jobs," be "good for the city," "pay for itself." Bunk. Study after study finds stadiums cost far more than they return.

Extractions: Alexandria, VA, May. 7 (UPI) New York, Miami and Washington are searching for ways to finance new stadiums. Taxpayers in each of these cities are reluctant to assume additional community indebtedness in order to provide the necessary funds to build and maintain a modern stadium. In each of these cases there is a solution available that would preclude the necessity of saddling the community with this expense. The solution is to find a hotel company or consortium of venture capitalists willing to build a stadium that is a multi-purpose hotel, convention center, entertainment venue and athletic stadium. Such a design would have synergistic features that would make it a profitable entity rather than a financial burden on the community. Instead of the luxurious skyboxes for selected fans in traditional style, that are in use only occasionally, a ring of hotel rooms would face the playing field. These rooms would have balconies from which the games could be observed comfortably. Occupancy for these rooms would be auctioned off to the highest bidder for game days and for events such as musical concerts and conventions. The exterior of the stadium would consist of hotel rooms, all with views of the city.
