David Beckham earned around £10m last year alone from his pay and various sponsorship deals, including million-pound deals with Brylcream and Police sunglasses. Tiger Woods signed a five-year sponsorship contract with Nike for around US$40m which was renewed for a substantially higher sum. Sport has taken on greater significance in Asia more recently. With the Beijing Olympics, Omega PGA in Hong Kong, Malaysia Grand Prix and so many other international tournaments held in Asia, parties are jostling for a larger slice of the action. There is a role for everyone: event organisers, international governing bodies, sports federations, sports venue owners, merchandisers, broadcasters, participating teams/clubs and management consultants. Formulating effective strategies to exploit and protect these 'commodities' can be done through careful consideration of intellectual property ('IP') rights.

Extractions: April 16, 2004 BY JANET RAUSA FULLER Staff Reporter Sports marketing agent Nova Lanktree was new on the job when she got a call from an ad agency wanting to line up then-Denver Broncos lineman Karl Mecklenburg for some commercial work. "He's with Tampa Bay," Lanktree remembers the male executive telling her. "No, he's a Denver Bronco," she said. His retort: "Well, how do you know?" Nearly 20 years later, that exchange is still fresh in Lanktree's mind. "It was almost like he was not going to concede," she says. "And I knew if I kept saying, 'Yeah, he is,' I was going to be the bitch. So I just said, 'I'll verify it for you.' And I did." She was right. He was wrong. Not that any of that really mattered then, or now. In an industry crowded with men and egos, Lanktree says it's not her style to play up her gender. "What I discovered was that I was not in a man's world, I was in the world of sports, and it was up to me to prove my credibility, my knowledge, and develop people's trust in me," she said.
