Extractions: On May 6, 1954,Bannister stepped onto the track at Oxford where he would accomplish one of the greatest feats in history. It was a cold and windy day, but that would not stop him from reaching his goal. He toed the line along with the other runners. He crossed the finish line and stumbled to the ground. His effort to break the barrier left him drained of all his energy. His identity hinged on the time of the watch. If he succeeded he would be hailed as one of the greatest runners ever, but if he did not who would remember his name?

Extractions: The world of exercise is increasingly being shaped by data: Heart-rate monitors for the masses came out years ago; then there were bicycle computers, little devices that track speed, average speed, distance, time and revolutions per minute. The latest gadget for the data-driven workout, at least for cyclists, is the power meter. Power meters use sensors in the hub of the rear wheel to calculate how many watts of power are being generated. They also give all the other data a cyclist might want - heart rate, maximum heart rate, average heart rate, revolutions per minute, time, speed and average speed. After a ride, you can upload the data to a computer and see color-coded graphs of your performance. Cyclists have perhaps the most tools to monitor themselves. But there are gadgets for every type of activity. Runners time themselves and monitor their heart rates, of course, but they also can use global positioning sensors to measure speed and distance. Moderate exercisers can clip pedometers onto their belts to measure the number of steps they take each day.

Extractions: The Weston Creek supporters already had the champagne flowing to celebrate what looked like an easy win in the Yarralumla Relays after Trevor Jacobs set off on the final leg with almost a minute in hand. SCT's last runner, Mark Shepherd, couldn't even see Trevor in the distance on the first of two 1.5k laps. SCT spectators sensed that Mark was eating into Trevor's lead and Michael Hosking ran over to encourage Mark to 'go for the gold'. The gap was still close to 200 metres with a kilometre to go but it was shrinking quickly. The excitement level was close to that of the Auckland Commonwealth Games when Andrew Lloyd came from the New Zealand clouds to win the gold medal in the 5000 metres. The circuitous Yarralumla course gave a perfect view of the action and both Creek and SCT fans could sense the result would come down to a sprint finish. Mark still had 20 metres to make up as Trevor turned into the 100m downhill finishing straight. Trevor has an awesome downhill reputation and gave it everything. Mark used his 800m speed to good effect and gradually closed the gap. At the line it was

Vegetarian Diet For Athletes An increasing number of athletes are adopting vegetarian diets for Vegetarian athletes, like most athletes, may benefit from education on food choices http://www.andrews.edu/NUFS/vegathletes.htm
Extractions: An increasing number of athletes are adopting vegetarian diets for ecological, economic, religious, health and ethical reasons. Vegetarian diets (except possibly fruitarian and strict macrobiotic diets) can easily meet the nutritional requirements of all types of athletes provided they contain a variety of plant-foods. Vegetarian athletes, like most athletes, may benefit from education on food choices that benefit athletic performance and promote overall health. Energy and Macronutrient Requirements. Energy. Carbohydrates. Carbohydrates should make up the largest portion of the athletes diet. Numerous studies have concluded that increased carbohydrate (CHO) intake can improve exercise capacity and that low-CHO diets can be detrimental to performance. High-CHO diets optimize muscle and liver glycogen stores (8,9) and have been shown to optimize performance during prolonged, moderate intensity exercise (i.e., distance cycling and running (10-13), and during intermittent (14) and short duration, high-intensity exercise (15-18). Recent studies have also suggested that benefit of CHO consumption is not limited to maintenance of glycogen stores, but also related to maintenance of Krebs cycle intermediates (12) and preservation of the bioenergetic state of exercising muscle (17) (factors also related to muscle fatigue).

Nutition For Female Athletes Poor nutrition in female athletes is often underlying symptoms such as tiredness, Female athletes may diet more aggressively than their nonsporting http://www.estronaut.com/a/nutiriton_eat_female_athlete.htm
Extractions: Poor nutrition in female athletes is often underlying symptoms such as: tiredness, performance plateaus or decreases, burn-out, and repeated injuries. Female athletes may diet more aggressively than their non-sporting counterparts (see female athletic triad). Female athletes often want to loose weight to improve their performance. As mentioned, few girls or women can get by with less than 1200-1500 per day. Extremely low fat diets have risks, even if the overall calories intake is good. This is generally considered to be diets that are less than 10% fat calories. Consequences of these include: low energy and performance, and deficiencies of iron, zinc, magnesium, folate (important if the woman plans a pregnancy), vitamins E, B6, B12, C, and A. Inadequate calorie intake can be the first step down the road to the Female Athletic Triad or other eating disorders. Rate this article: (1=lowest, 5=highest)
