Extractions: Like many others across the country, I developed a love for wiffleball at an early age, playing with neighborhood kids back when the Power Rangers were cool. The sport is thrilling, heartbreaking, and even life changing. Every walk of life can play it no matter if you're short or tall, an Olympic athlete or an out-of-shape college student.

Extractions: August 19th, 2007 2007 Travis Roy Foundation Tournament I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the volunteers, players, and fans for making this year's Travis Roy Foundation Wiffle ball event a huge success. The weekend featured 24 teams, the introduction of the "Kids Game", the Grand Opening of Little Wrigley, and, most of all, the passion and dedication of hundreds of people toward the cause for which the Travis Roy Foundation was created. The checks are still rolling in. So far over $147,000 has been raised by this event this year for survivors of spinal cord injuries and research into a cure. This brings the all-time amount raised by this event to nearly $300,000. Tom Sleeper and the Boston Terriers led the way by raising $30,000 in fan club pledges. Travis Begoyne, from the Boston Beef, received the individual leader award for raising the most donations. From the moment Dave Barger, CEO of Jet Blue, threw out the first pitch until The Curse Lifted celebrated their first championship at Little Fenway with a victory over Comets Express, the weekend was packed with joy and laughter. There was the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Little Wrigley, home run derbies pitched by John Buccigross, Lee Roy, and Bill Lee, a closest-to-the-pin contest, and a silent auction that included autographed jerseys by David Ortiz and Daisuke Matsuzaka, Red Sox-Yankees tickets, and Jet Blue tickets. Mario Fontana and Larry Riegert were inducted into the Little Fenway Hall of Fame. Garrett Burgess was named the tournament's MVP.

Extractions: Today's Globe Local Opinion Politics ... Local REGION August 28, 2005 Ryan Norris does meticulous preparation. He shows up at the ballfield at least an hour early from hie Newton home and carefully measures eight narrow triangles, marking their boundaries with orange spray paint. In his trunk, he carries several models of 31-inch bats. Most are plastic. And yellow. The best bats were made in the late 1990s and are just a few grams heavier than those made in other years. In this game, every little bit counts. For at least two hours each Sunday, Norris and about 40 others use those skinny bats to try to knock the daylights out of a finicky ball about the weight of an empty soda can. Welcome to the ''sport" of Wiffle ball, a game that in recent years has ballooned in popularity from friendly battles at a neighborhood barbecue to a pursuit that prompts grown-ups to endure winter training. ''The two greatest things in sports are striking someone out and hitting a home run," said Chuck Freedman of Newton, a consultant for eBay who is known for his pitching prowess on the Colonel Angus team (named for a ''Saturday Night Live" skit). ''Both are attainable in Wiffle ball."
