Extractions: ADVERTISEMENT Published December 30, 2007 Annapolis tennis group Jaime Veracka, the founder of the 10-year old Annapolis Area Tennis School, is a passionate advocate of wheelchair tennis. Veracka is a certified tennis instructor who has worked with several wheelchair athletes over the last few years including Brenda Gilmore, a Prince George County tennis instructor and wheelchair player. "I saw someone in wheelchair and asked him if he played sports, thinking in the back of my mind he might want to try wheelchair tennis," Veracka said. "We went out and not too far into the first lesson, he was hooked." Veracka says the greatest reward from her efforts is seeing the joy on the faces of her players as they fearlessly endeavor to succeed in playing the game. The International Tennis Federation in London, at www.itftennis.com, sponsors worldwide competition and maintains international rankings of wheelchair competition. Said Veracka: "The main difference between wheelchair tennis and regular tennis, in addition to the option to take the ball on two bounces, is the mobility of the player. Moving and getting to the ball has patterns distinctively different from able-bodied players. Various drills for these movement patterns are learned and practiced, as well as the mechanics of generating torque (resulting in power) for the wheelchair player."

Extractions: Chair users need to learn to grip the racquet differently than able-bodied players because they need to hold the racquet and push the chair at the same time. Many beginners want to keep the racquet in their lap while they push, but that results in not being ready to return the ball from the opponent. The racquet is held in the dominant hand with four fingers, leaving the thumb free. This leaves the pad of the hand free, giving the player a contact point with the wheel or push rim. But the free hand does the majority of the work on the court, because it is pushing and turning the chair constantly to get into the best position to return the ball.
