Extractions: Blog April Fools Tournament Frequently Asked Questions George Mason University - Underwater Hockey Club Submitted on April 1st, 2007 by Josh Thaxton The 2nd Annual April Fools Tournament was a great success this year. Special thanks go out to Dan Forsythe and Helen Smith for manning the referee's table and Becky Reed for selling shirts and running other errands. Thanks also go out to all the members of the GMU Underwater Hockey Club and the Beltway Bottom Feeders who contributed the equipment, expertise and sweat which came together to produce such a great experience for everyone. Congratulations go out to Connecticut for winning the open division in a hard-fought match against the Beltway Bottom Feeders. These teams were only separated by one point over two days but one point is all you need. The college division was dominated by the University of Florida Gators who's fast and coordinated team which beat the Patriots in the final game. It seems unfair that a single school should be the national champions of three sports so look for some fierce competition next year. In the meantime, congratulations to you as well! Extractions: As Peter Breslow found out for Weekend Edition Saturday , it usually takes new players a few games before they learn that timing is everything. Flipper-footed players six on a side chase a 3-pound puck across the bottom of a swimming pool, usually 8 feet deep. They use "sticks" actually, curved implements about a foot long to push the puck toward a 10-foot-wide untended goal.

Club Listing / Underwater Hockey Underwater Hockey (UWH) is a non-contact competitive sport played on the bottom of a pool while wearing a mask, snorkel, and fins. A plastic coated puck is pushed and shot between players with a short stick (12 inches) as teams attempt to advance the puck into goals located at both ends of the pool. Although breath control is a part of the game, most dives are only about ten seconds long. Emphasis is placed on three-dimensional awareness, underwater finesse and most importantly, on teamwork. Indeed, in underwater hockey, there is no "ball-hogging!" Not only is UF underwater hockey an excellent way to have a FUN swimming workout while being involved in a socially friendly, team-oriented sport, UWH also dramatically improves one's snorkeling and scuba skills, and overall level of comfort in the water! A New UF Team The club is actively looking for additional male and female players. Swimming experience is not necessary, so long as one is able to swim. A desire to have fun is necessary! Perhaps most important, the UF UWH club has a dual philosophy which encourages participation that is competitive or recreational. Whether one is interested in joining our competitive "tournament team" or simply interested in a fun water sport that facilitates recreation and exerciseeveryone is welcome! The team has equipment to borrow during practice if one does not have his or her own mask, fins, and snorkel.

The last group of dedicated players have moved on leaving no replacements. If you're interested in playing and are willing to help pull together a team, contact Jon and get the puck going! Underwater hockey is a fast moving game that is great for swimmers, divers, and anyone who wants to get in shape and have fun. It is played at the bottom of a pool in 6-8 feet of water by two teams of six. The puck is 3 pounds, the stick is only about 12 inches long, and the goal is about 9 feet. The rules are "non-contact" and the strategy is similar to soccer or ice hockey. Since no one can hold their breath forever the game depends on teamwork. The sport offers great cross-training for scuba divers, runners, swimmers, and bikers. Plus, because it's non-contact and underwater, people of different sizes and genders play on an equal field. We have equipment for everyone. All you need is a swim suit. If you have a mask, fins and/or snorkel, bring them. Swim goggles can work too. We have sticks and gloves for all new players. If you have any questions you can
