Extractions: The rules are "non-contact" and players generally cover "zones" around the puck. Success (scoring) ultimately depends on teamwork, since no single person can hold their breath forever. Individual strength is less of an advantage than it is in many other sports. The water nullifies pure mass advantage and emphasizes clever use of torque. Often, women and smaller players appear to have a slight advantage over other players, so size is not an advantage in Underwater Hockey.
How To Play Underwater Hockey underwater hockey is a breathhold sport. Players wear a mask, snorkel, fins along with a 12 inch hockey stick and padded glove. It is a real sport, http://www.sd-h2o-hockey.com/how.html
Extractions: Underwater hockey is a "breath-hold" sport. Players wear a mask, snorkel, fins along with a 12 inch hockey stick and padded glove. It is a "real" sport, with regional, national, and international tournaments. In these tournaments there are refs, timers and athletes with serious intent, but during "friendly" games and practice sessions, it is more like any other sport where people just get together and play without the formality and time structure of a tournament. There are quite a few athletes playing underwater hockey. There are a lot more "wish I was an athlete" players. The water is an equalizer so newer players, men and women, young or old can play in the same game with the "jocks". Virtually all of the clubs/teams are coed. Underwater hockey is a great cardiovascular workout and a lot of fun. Some clubs are more competition oriented and some are more "'recreation" oriented. Even in a competition oriented club a "non-athlete" can still have a good time and stay in tip top shape for diving and other sports. The Game...
Extractions: The score is tied, 2-2 as the final seconds of the championship game tick away. Suddenly the other team makes a furious last ditch attack and an enormous player breaks free with the puck. There's nothing to stop them from scoring... except you, upside down and unable to breathe! Sound like a bad dream? Fortunately this is Underwater Hockey, so you effortlessly knock down their shot, tip it underneath them and, with a negligent flip of your fins, go over your opponent, charge down the pool and score. You didn't really need to breathe anyway, did you?

Extractions: Think of hockey played in a swimming pool. Didn't help much did it? Underwater hockey (AKA Octopush) is a fast action, largely non-contact game played on the bottom of a pool. Two teams of six players pit their wits, and lungs, against each other and try to score goals by pushing or flicking the puck into their opponents goal. At first, just basic snorkelling gear (mask, fins, and snorkel). Once you're hooked you'll want to get your own pusher (the stick), a hat and some kind of protective glove. It's a DiCAPac WP-400 (from Digital Rev's eBay shop @ £21.99 shipped to the UK). The WP-400 is basically a sealed heavy-duty plastic bag with a port for the lens. It's sealed with a zip-loc closure, which is then rolled over several times and held shut with velcro. The manufacturer lists a number of cameras it's claimed to be compatible with, but neither the WP-400 (or any other of their other sizes) lists the G400, so I took a bit of a guess. The camera fits in it OK, but the case design has the lens port slightly off centre, whereas the camera has a more-or-less centred lens. At wide angles the port can cause vignetting if the camera isn't in exactly the right place, but it's manageable. The main advantage of the EWA-Marine case is that the lens is enclosed in the port, so that when using the flash, there's less risk of it reflecting off the inside of the case and causing unwanted artefacts in the photo. (The EWA-Marine case basically has a sheet of acryllic across the entire front of the case - so there's no isolation between the flash and lens.)

All RSS Feeds Get Out Sunday, November 21, 2004; Page M08 Just because the National Hockey League is on strike doesn't mean you have to suffer through winter puck-less. The Beltway Bottom Feeders, a local underwater hockey team, plays year-round, and even those of us who aren't built like Jaromir Jagr can join in the fun. Never heard of the game? Underwater hockey may sound like an indie sport, but there's actually a U.S. national team (Bottom Feeder David Kennedy is a member) that competes in the World Cup every two years against powerhouses such as New Zealand, Australia and France. In the States, Nationals are held every summer the Bottom Feeders hosted the tournament in June 2003. Learning to play is easy. Like many extreme sports popping up on ESPN 2 (arctic golf? trampoline basketball?), this one takes a classic sporting concept and adds an ultra-challenging twist. Unlike other X games, though, underwater hockey doesn't require you to travel to the ends of the Earth or risk life and limb just drop in on a Bottom Feeders practice. Be ready for a grueling workout: Not only will your lungs and legs burn, but all that underwater strategizing means you'll be mentally spent as well. The good news? Once you get better, the sport becomes more about game plan, less about frantic diving. The bad news? Once you get better, the team will stop letting you off easy.
