In March 2006 we held a two-day team trial at Garnet Hill in New York and were pleased by the number who applied for spots on the team afterwards. Interest was so strong that we were able to name alternates, a luxury indeed. The United States will be sending its strongest team in at least a decade, with five veterans returning and three exciting newcomers. While the bi-annual World Championships are for the elite, there are other World-level opportunities too. The World Masters Championship is for skiers 35 and up and the World Juniors Championship is for 20 and under. This year the Masters event is in Asarna, Sweden, the site of the 2004 World Champs, and the Juniors are in beautiful Salzburg, Austria. We would encourage as many US athletes as possible to attend. In fact, for skiers aspiring to membership on the A-team, the Juniors and Masters are excellent venues for tuning and showcasing your skills. Scott Pleban Alan Oprsal Greg Walker Carl Fey Alternates:

The traditional form (sometimes referred to as "Foot Orienteering" or "Foot-O") involves cross-country running , though other forms have evolved. The competition is a timed race in which individual participants use a special purpose map and a magnetic compass to navigate through diverse terrain (often wooded) and visit, in sequence, control points that are indicated on the map. The course of control points is kept a secret from competitors before the start, when they are provided with a detailed topographic map on which the course is marked. Competitors start at staggered intervals, are individually timed , and are expected to perform all navigation skills on their own. Standings are determined first by successful completion of the course, then by shortest time on course. Rules and principles of the sport are defined by the International Orienteering Federation The English name derives from the Swedish word "orientering". The term was first used to describe the sport in 1918 by Major Ernst Killander, then President of the Stockholm Amateur Athletic Association, in publicity for the first large scale competitive meet held in

Extractions: Continental Cup ... More Races Published: Sun Mar 18, 2007 2:00 AM MDT The US ski orienteering team just returned from a successful week in Moscow, Russia. The world ski orienteering championships, or ski-WOC, as it is informally known, took place over one week at the Planernaya Sport Complex, with athletes from 24 different countries. The Russians did an amazing job running the event, and I was very impressed with the overall efficiency of everything. There was good competition and interesting courses, which led to a very enjoyable week. The four races at ski-WOC were the sprint, the long distance mass start, the middle distance, and the relay. For mass start orienteering races, there are several different maps handed out, with a complicated system to make sure that everybody ends up doing the same route in the end. The purpose of the different maps is to make sure that nobody follows another competitor, since you never knowwhere your other competitors are heading. The US ski-o team was a mix of well-experienced veterans and some ski-WOC rookies. Easily the most experienced ski orienteer in the US, Sharon Crawford led the US team in her 11th (!) world championships. Candice Raines, Julie Raymond, and Alex Jospe rounded out the womens team. Each team is allowed to race four men and four women each day, although many teams bring specialists, so we brought five guys: Alan Oprsal, Carl Fey, Scott Pleban, Greg Walker, and Randy McGarvey.

These special rules and symbols are described in this chapter. Deviations from the specifications are permissible only with the sanction of the national Ski-O Committee. For international events, sanction must be given by the IOF Ski-O Committee. Complete foot-orienteering maps may be used in ski-o competitions at all levels, if the dark green ( symbol 410 ) is replaced by light green ( symbol 406 ). A different scale may be used, but permission shall be obtained from the IOF Ski-O Committee at IOF ski-o events and from the national Ski-O Committee for other events. The magnification in scale has made it possible to build a more dense and easily legible track network. Furthermore, the error probability has decreased, as the shapes of the junctions and the departure angles of the tracks can be drawn correctly on the map. 5.4 Contour interval
