In a Western context, the term refers specifically to Chinese and Mongolian styles of wrestling. These styles have a long history and have undergone several changes in both name and form. The earliest Chinese term for wrestling, "jÇao dÇ" (horn butting), refers to an ancient sport in which contestants wore horned headgear with which they attempted to butt their opponents. Legend states that "jiao di" was used in 2697 BC by the Yellow Emperor 's army to gore the soldiers of a rebel army led by Chi You In later times, young people would play a similar game, emulating the contests of domestic cattle, without the headgear. Jiao di has been described as an originating source of wrestling and latter forms of martial arts in China The practice of Jiao li in the Zhou Dynasty was recorded in the Classic of Rites "Jiao li" (è§å) was a grappling martial art that was developed in the Zhou Dynasty (between the twelfth and third century BCE). Extractions: Pao Ting Shuai-Chiao In the beginning of evolution, mankind was very animalistic. Survival only for the strong. Man had to survive hunger, natures elements, animal as well as human attacks. Self preservation became a way of life. Most people watched animals and tried to copy their survival techniques. Early man was very ritualistic, chanting and dancing around the campfire. Ritual and self defense combined in a dance, copying the moves of their ancient sacred animals. These movements eventually evolved into a style of self defense. In Chinese history, records of wrestling style can be traced back to 2697 BC. When it was used between the Emperor Hwang Ti and the rebel Chih Yu, who was known for his wrestling skills. In the era, the term Chiao-Ti (horn locking) was used because, during ritual or practice combatants wore a headdress adorned with horns. When they would grapple with each other, it looked like 2 animals locking horns. During the Chou dynasty (1122-255 BC), wrestling skills were a prerequisite for all military personnel. Ancient records tell of wrestling tournaments with thousands of competitors, going on for days. Chiao-Ti (now called Shuai-Chiao or throwing horns), had been an excellent exhibition art at festivals and carnivals. Feats of strength and skill would always please a crowd. However, Shuai-Chiao was not the only fighting style around. Bare knuckle fighting, weaponry, horsemanship and archery were also dominant ways of self defense at this time.

Please list your location, your martial arts background (if any), and goals for Combat Shuai-Chiao training. If you are police or military affiliated, please indicated that as well. - Sifu Mark Cheng, ACSCA Los Angeles Chapter Representative Shuai-Chiao is a centuries-old combat art making a modern revival. Little known outside of China and Taiwan, this ancient form of Chinese wrestling has its biggest foreign following in the USA. With a growing audience worldwide and a recent surge in grappling's popularity due to No Holds Barred fighting tournaments, more and more self-defense enthusiasts are flocking to see this forefather of Judo and Jiu-Jitsu. Combat Shuai-Chiao is a particular understanding of the art, founded by Master David Chee-Kai Lin, who is currently based in Atlanta, Georgia. Lin spent years in Taiwan under the direct tutelage of the legendary Grandmaster Ch'ang Tung-sheng, known to the Chinese martial arts community as the "Flying Butterfly" for his ability to move effortlessly around his opponents and send them flying with beautiful and powerful throws. In the USA, Lin was recruited as a hand-to-hand combat trainer for Sionics, a prestigious anti-terrorism school in the southeast.

Extractions: Historically, Shuai-chiao has been a system of self-defense in the Chinese military program, and a national sport, which embodies tai chi - the philosophical root of all Chinese martial arts. Today, Shuai-chiao is a complementary system for san-shou (modern full-contact sport) competitors, and for all martial artists as a tool of evaluating their techniques' effectiveness. The Shuai-chiao poem consists of 30 characters. The six main characters form the basic principles for timing, distance, force, angle, reaction and control. The next nine characters depict strategies and methods for balance, countering the opponent, footwork, had techniques, approaching methods, holds and grabs. The last 15 characters are the particular techniques of hand and foot combinations of punches, kicks, grabs and throws. The poem's purpose is to condense Shuai-chiao's content along certain guidelines and principles, rather than the technical details of throws. Shuai-chiao techniques can be counted as 36 major throws; with minor detail variations, they could add up to 3,600 combinations. A favorite Shuai-chiao saying explains in a classical way, " Numerous techniques as many as the hairs of a cow."
