Variations on the game have been played throughout South East Asia for hundreds of years. Some people believe it was brought into the region by the famous Venitian explorer Marco Polo, who may have seen a similar sport in China. The traditional form of the game is a lot like hacky sack (aka footbag), with a group of players standing in a circle and trying to keep the ball in the air without using their hands. The modern form developed during the 1930s after the introduction of the net. Almost every nation that played the game knew it by a different name: sepak raga (Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei), takraw (Thailand), sipa (Philippines), ching loong (Myanmar), rago (Indonesia) or kator (Laos). Representatives of several nations met at the South East Asian Peninsula Games in 1965 and after a heated debate the sport of a thousand names was officially called sepak takraw.

It is the right time to introduce it to the local people, I am very sure that everyone will like this 'cool' game. I used to play for a few different clubs when I was in Malaysia but now I'm still waiting for the opportunity to play here at Newcastle. Sepak Takraw was created by the royal family of Malaysia about 500 years ago. The name itself comes from two languages. Sepak is "kick" in Malay, and Takraw is the "ball" in Thai. When it is born, It looked like Japanese "Kemari", and some became a circle, and a pole was kicked, and the number of times was being competed in. It looks very similar to the Japanese traditional game, "kemari" where the players form a loose circle and the number of times the ball is kicked before it touches the ground is counted. In 1965 the game was unified into the present volleyball style with the addition of a net and the adoption of international rules. It is recorded in the cultures of South-East Asia nations as early as in the 11th century that the game was played extensively - Takraw in Thailand, Sipa in the Philippines, Sepakraga in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, Ching Loong in Myanmar, Rago in Indonesia and Kator in Laos. It is also recorded that in one of his many trips, the merchant Marco Polo brought back to Europe a game from China which was kicking an implement into the air and counting the number of kicks, a style resembling today's sepak takraw game.

Travelling at a vigorous speed towards the opponent's territory, the ball narrowly evades the reaching foot of one of the opposing blockers and eventually hits the ground. The crowd goes wild... This is not one of the acrobatic scenes from the Matrix trilogy or any other action film. It's a scene from a 'sepak takraw' match, a particularly popular sport in Southeast Asia. Essentially a net game played with feet, 'sepak takraw' is a hybrid of football (soccer) and volleyball with a bit of gymnastics and kung fu thrown in. Countless variations of the game are played throughout the region, but the basic objective of each is to keep the hollow, grapefruit-sized ball from touching the ground by keeping it airborne with the feet, knees, head, shoulders, elbows - or almost every part of the body, except the hands.

Imagine a net like in volleyball, then reduce the volleyball to the size of a grapefruit and make it out of rattan, and that's all the equipment required for a Sepak Takraw game. But, unlike volleyball where you can use your hands, in Sepak Takraw the players are only allowed to touch the ball with their feet, body or head. This leads to some of the most amazing acrobatics ever seen on a court. In fact, Sepak Takraw is very much like a mix between volleyball, gymnastics, kung fu and circus acrobatics. You've got to see it to believe it! In Thailand, the game is called just Takraw, and is often played by laborers or motor-cycle taxi drivers at the end of the day, when they want to wind down. They will find an empty piece of land where they will park two trucks or cars. Then they will string up a takraw net between the two vehicles and, voila, the game of takraw can begin. It's also played at temples, in fairgrounds, in

Extractions: Sepaktakraw will continue to be a major sport in the Asian Games. Like in 2002 in Busan, six gold medals will be up for grabs once again at the Doha Games in Qatar. The events to be contested are: Men and Women's Regu and Doubles, with three medals at stake in each category. This shows that we have high recognition in Asian sports," said Mr. Abdul Halim Kader, the Singapore Sepaktakraw Federation (PERSES) President soon after his return from Doha recently. Mr. Abdul Halim, who is also the Secretary General of ISTAF, added that the circle events have been replaced with a new and more exciting event - the Doubles. This is due to certain problems with the counting in circle events. Now, with the Doubles, the event should be more exciting and less controversial. In any case, we will review the counting system to make it possible for Sepaktakraw to be an eight-gold sport," he added. Mr. Abdul Halim led a 17 men delegation of officials and players from Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore to the Qatar international Sports (QSI) exhibition, held in Doha from 1-9 April. The QSI exhibition has been an annual even for the last two years, bringing together hundreds of sporting companies and federations from around the world in one setting.
