It was derived from the original roller derby, only this particular version used inline roller skates to modernize the sport (although several skaters used the traditional "quads"). The program was taped at Universal Studios Stage 21 in Orlando, Florida for the first and third seasons (1999 and 2000) and the former American Gladiators arena in the show's final season. The first few weeks of the show's second season, which ran from August to October 1999 were taped at MGM Grand Las Vegas Between January 1999 and January 2001, Knoxville, Tennessee television impresarios Ross K. Bagwell Sr. and Stephen Land , under the name Pageboy Entertainment, collaborated with CBS to stage this new televised revival. Bagwell and Land recruited numerous stars from the Roller Derby of yesteryear, as well as newer stars from various athletic backgrounds, including nationally ranked speed skaters, to skate in the six-team World Skating League (WSL). Jerry Seltzer was named RollerJam "commissioner".

A History of America's Favorite and Finest Sport Roller derby is an American invention that appeared internationally. It is a roller skating sport, and for some leagues it is sports/entertainment. The sport first appeared as a marathon styled race in Chicago, 1935. Male and female skaters speed skated for thousands of miles on a flat skating surface with a slightly elevated banks at the turns. The race was a race of time and endurance formatted along the lines of the great marathon dance competitions. The roller marathon soon went "on the road" and invented a track that could be set up and reconfigured based on the size of hall, armory or arena it was in. The track evolved into an elevated banked track over a year with kick rails and guard rails. Always changing, by the 1940s, roller derby unfolded into a popular live spectator sport. First televised in the late 40s and 50s, the TV shows struck a nerve with viewers literally overnight. Television brought the derby into it's first zenith of national and international fame and ignited an enduring love affair between roller derby, the media and American TV audiences.

Extractions: fctAdTag("bigbox",MyGenericTagVar,1); It's true that all good things must come to an end. The upshot, however, is that all good things that come to an end will probably be back in vogue 25 years later. So it stands to reason that with roller derby reaching its last great zenith in the early '70s, it must be due for a huge comeback right about ... now. Tonight marks the return of roller derby to mass-market television with the debut of RollerJam on the Nashville Network. In its turn-of-the-millennium form, the roller derby track is made of plastic instead of wood, most of the contestants wear in-line skates instead of the old quads, and there are as many as 11 cameras following the action, set to the beat of a thumping synthesized soundtrack. But, fundamentally, RollerJam is essentially the same bloodless bloodsport that made its television debut in 1948 and remained a TV staple until 1973, when it virtually disappeared.
Extractions: Rollerjam by The Cubs Fan Main Hi. I tried do this recap a week ago, but it didn't go so well, so I kinda ended up putting it off a few days and try again. This is the last episode of RollerJam - after about two years, TNN has pulled the plug. The weird thing about this episode is, unlike others that pick up where the last one left off, this one seems to be at least 3 weeks after last week's one. Not sure if RollerJam had more episodes but TNN wanted the show to be done on this day and they (either RollerJam or TNN) just decided to air the last episode rather than the next one, or if RollerJam is just being goofy. (Equally likely, don't you know.) This jump in continuity GREATLY annoyed me when watching this the first time. In some cases, we've already seen part A of the story, but now are already to part C. And there's a couple cases where angles come out of the blue, with no set up that we've seen. Quite frustrating. But why should you have my problems? (You don't want them, trust me.) For your benefit, and seeing as I've already seen this show once, I've tried to piece together what's happened in the shows that weren't shown, so everything makes sense when it happens later in the show. Hopefully, I'll cover everything - and if you don't like quasi-fantasy booking, just pretend that these are two video packages tacked on the front of the show, okay? It should be noted that there are small hints that this wasn't all completed in two weeks time, and other bits of angles that are just mentioned in passing that I'm going skip over just to make this sane.
Review: RollerJam(TM) LeisureSuit.net Senior Editor Jordan Hoffman reviews the return of Roller Derby. http://www.leisuresuit.net/Webzine/articles/roller_jam.shtml

"The Evil Empire" A few hours ago my co-editor Kerry Douglas Dye handed me a tape and said, "TNN is running Roller Derbies. Take a look." I initially flashed on a tongue-in-cheek 70's nostalgia trip, but the tape showed something quite different. Like the recent Kiss Komeback, the WSL (World Skating League) is a fearful cultural leftover bereft of any irony or shame. The recent broadcast opened with a sterling voice-over about Roller Derbys importance in the last generation. This was spoken over images in Black and White . . . images from a time when broadcast was all done in color. This then exploded into a proactive and in-my-face montage of extreme roller derby action. This was the new, modern, updated Derby for the Millennium, Roller Jam(TM). I was then introduced to two clowns who would narrate the excitement. Wouldntcha know one of em had a zany nickname like Goose. It was during their intro that I realized that everything had been horribly scripted and pre-taped. I could tell because all the cuts were miserably edited, leading me to believe that the whole operation was too low-budget for more than one camera.
Extractions: A spectator sport based on formation roller-skating, the history of roller derby dates back to 1935 when it was first played as an endurance race. Enjoyed at both professional and amateur level before dropping off the sports radar in the late 1980s, roller derby began experiencing a massive grassroots revival in the early 21st century following a surge of interest spread over the internet. Traditionally a sport for both men and women, it has attracted a predominately female circuit during its current revival in urban centres across the US, where there are currently over 135 active leagues. Now, as this gripping contact sport begins to spread across Europe - the London Roller Girls team were recently featured in a Time Out cover story - Challenge brings you all the fast-paced thrills and spills of the roller derby in Rollerjam! With its hot-wheeled pace and retro-styled gangs, enjoying Rollerjam is like watching Starlight Express while being beaten on by Sailor Joe biker chicks - and just as fun too!

Note also that this was last updated on 12/9/99, and things may have changed since then. Like 'real' professional team sports, players change teams, and like professional wrestling, angles change over time. I'll try to update this periodically, but be aware that it may be slightly out of date. California Quakes Winners of the Founder's Cup (End of Season 1's Tournament), probably the most all around talented of all the teams, and my personal favorites, the Quakes are consistently at the top of the league. They are lead by Sean Atkinson, a third generation Roller derby star. Also of note on the men's side are jammers Tony Santiago and Eric "the White Pony" Slopey. Slopey got that name from his trademark victory celebration where he pretended he was riding a horse. Unfortunately, he's seems to have stopped doing it this season. The women's side is led by Stacy Blitch, who's part of the Bod Squad. Fellow Bod Blitch and fellow Squad members Jamie Conemac and Cindy Zimmerman wear distinctive sky blue and white outfits (as opposed to the normal Quake Blue and Yellow), but (usually) get along with the rest of the team well. Amy Craig may not be part of the Bod Squad, but the quick jammer was the top scorer among all of the Quakes, men and women, last season. She's been a little less visible this season, but she's still one of the quickest people out there.

RollerJam more as television spectacle than sport, whereas the original focused more on the latter. "Part of the charm of old Roller Derby, especially viewed now, is how gritty and low-budget it all seems," Sullivan says. "I would think that RollerJam would kill for that kind of edgy feeling. Instead, RollerJam has gone for the fog machines, disco lights and spandex approach." While Sullivan is impressed by the athleticism, speed, and grace of the

National Roller Derby League - "Spotlight" Many would agree that D Amato made TNN s rollerjam worth watching. The show would become known as rollerjam. D Amato was hired to train the rookie http://www.nationalrollerderbyleague.com/Spotlight.htm
Extractions: Many would agree that D'Amato made TNN's Rollerjam worth watching. As captain of the "New York Enforcers," The Nashville Network (later turned "The New Network" and now "Spike TV") understood that D'Amato was a valuable asset for viewers everywhere. He basically ruled Friday-night television in '99 with raw attitude! In a world where roller derby was switching to inline skates, this man chose to stay true to the Old School by continuing to wear Quad-style skates... hence earning the nickname "The Quadfather." Though he left the world too soon, his mark will be felt for years to come. Little is known about Mark D'Amato, as he seemed to be the type of man to keep to himself. Beyond the shrouds of mystery, what we do know of his past is quite brief. As many skaters can relate, D'Amato spend his childhood watching roller derby and fancied one day of competing within the sport. Attending the games alongside his father, young Mark would awe in the sportsmanship and especially the showmanship of the players. In the early 70s, at just 15 years of age, he fulfilled his desires to become a roller derby skater. "I lied and told them I was 18..." D'Amato admits. "I was fascinated by the athleticism and the theatrics..."
