Nadia Ciuriak called police to her house at least half a dozen times before they charged Gary Kotar under an old bylaw that makes it illegal for anyone to play a game or sport on any Hamilton street. Kotar's 10-year-old son Ryan and his friends like to set up nets in front of his house, which is three doors away from Ciuriak's place. "We were just playing on the road, then the cops came," said Ryan during a break in a game on the weekend. Some consider road hockey a time-honoured Canadian tradition, but it's against the law in several municipalities in the country. Ciuriak says that after years of tolerating the game, and retrieving balls that ended up in her garden, she turned to police to get the players off the street.

Extractions: 94 NHL All Stars Still Have What it Takes May 13, Hidden Acres was the site of the 11th Annual Road Hockey Tournament. A total of 16 teams registered and the tournament ran very smoothly with no rain and no serious injuries. In addition Don (Campbell help here with a last name, maybe even a first name) had set up temporary boards around the court which made for much better games with almost continuous action! The 16 teams were set up in 4 divisions with 3 teams from each making the playoff round. A great time was had during the round robin, with many exciting matches. At the end 4 teams were given a bye through the first round of the playoffs: Wanna Be Leafs, Beat Petes, K.P. Saints and Blazers. However the bye proved no guarantee of success as two of these teams, the Saints and Wanna Be Leafs were knocked off in their first playoff round. Wanna Be Leafs were beaten 6-0 by the 94 NHL All Stars, while the Saints were defeated 6-5 in overtime by the Hidden Acres Camp 2006 Champs (who proved to be incorrectly named as the day wore on). The next round proved to be equally gripping with the 94 NHL All Stars defeating the HAC 2006 Champs, who were clearly tired out from there grueling overtime victory, 6-1. Meanwhile the Beat Petes were in tough to defeat the Architects 5-4, and the three time champion Blazers continued their reign of terror defeating Team Canada 3-1.

This didn't prevent 5 former students (L-R) Bruce McCowan, Tom Hamilton, Steve Falkner, David Harper, Ray Hardiment from reliving their early '60s road hockey games on McCowan Road (of all places) right at the end of the school driveway. Tom had come all the way from France for the May 5th reunion date. Although disappointed that he couldn't have a look inside his old school, he was pleased with this one last opportunity to lob the tennis ball onto the school roof while he still can!
