Georgia has changed its policy with regard to playing in skill level events. Basically, a player should select a single skill level that s/he wishes to declare themself to play in the tournament. If that player wants to enter more than one skill-qualified division, then it makes sense that those divisions should each be at the same basic skill level. As an example, a player CAN enter both "A" and "35+A"; but, a player CANNOT enter both "A" and "B". Of course, there are some combinations of multiple skill level divisions that might be permissible, such as a player who enters both "C" and a higher skilled, but age-qualified division such as "35+ B"; however, a player would NOT be allowed to do the opposite (i.e. enter "B" and "35+C").

Here we are on the other side of the ISRA State Doubles Championships, held last weekend at Glass Court in Lombard. Players numbering 166 showed up to play Men's, Women's, Mixed (maximum of three divisions so long as one was Mixed). There's an upside and a downside to this. The obvious upside is, if you're coming to play the tourney, PLAY it to the max! Many did... The downside is, scheduling challenges ensue since one partner out of four players is inevitably playing a match on another court. The other downside is how your body feels on Monday! Congratulations to all who took home medals and to those who made it through three divisions relatively unscathed. Now, what's next? Three sanctioned tourneys in Illinois The Lake County Open next weekend at The Southlake Club, ISRA State Singles the weekend of February 8-10 at The Chalet, and the Shamrock Shootout in March, back at Glass Court (check out the entry, just posted on the tournament calendar on this page). Besides readying ourselves for the upcoming tournaments, there's behind-the-scenes work going on with the ISRA Newsletter and ISRA Annual Awards (February 9 at The Chalet). The newsletter is in final edit and should reach your homes by early February. On page 14, please review the instructions for updating your profile on the USA Racquetball website. We're planning to go to an electronic format sometime later this year and you won't want to miss out! Relative to ISRA Awards, thanks to all who submitted nominations. The ISRA Board is currently in the process of voting for nominees in the categories of Male and Female Players of the Year, Most Improved Player of the Year, and the Distinguished Service Award. Additionally, Barry Dixon, President of Junior Team Illinois, is overseeing the process of choosing this year's James B. Dvorak Award winner.

If you don?t play the leagues and just play racquetball, you?ll know him just as well. Jim was the kind of guy that always had a smile on his face and great words of encouragement. A die hard Yankees fan and a great friend to junior racquetball. Regardless of whether or not he was playing in a tournament at the club he would always stop to watch the juniors play and then come to the tournament desk and say, ?I love watching the kids. Here?s a do-nation.? His last act on Sunday before leaving the club was to donate two more racquets to the Junior Program. ?Hey Toni Lee...do me a favor call Jules and let her know I?ve left these for the Junior Program.?
