"Don't worry," says Dave Dirickson, 32, who's been riding mountainboards for about four years and is serving as my instructor for the day. "Just don't look at the things you don't want to hit." But at the base of the hill, all I see are things I don't want to hit picnic tables, trash cans, trees, a guy walking a large Rottweiler. Nevertheless, I "drop in" and somehow carve a few wide turns. Squatting low and gripping the side of the knobby-tired skateboard, I manage to slalom past all obstacles. Except one. A pesky Douglas fir fills my vision and there's nothing to do but bail out on my butt.

The riders fly down the mountainside over rollers, through bermed turns and blast over jumps to the finish line. The Big Air competition is just that. Similar to big air contests on the snow, the riders launch themselves off of a huge jump and perform incredible aerial maneuvers. Slopestyle adds the challenge of rails into the Big Air event.
