The bigger the game, the more the Patriots look to senior Brett Coates, and this strategy played a big role in First Colonial's strong run to the Beach District championship game last week. The Patriots began the week in a tie with Kempsville for third place with a game to go. They played the Chiefs in the season-finale, and Coates had nine kills as First Colonial upended Kempsville in two close games to break the tie. Four days later, Coates had 16 kills as the Patriots knocked off Tallwood in the Beach District semifinals. And Saturday, in what Coates called his best game of the season, he recorded 23 kills as the Patriots fell in a three-game thriller to Kempsville in the tournament final. ``He usually gets 12-13 kills in a match,'' Lottinville said of the 5-foot-8 Coates. ``The guys were getting him the ball a lot, and Brett really stepped it up.''

The more proficient a technique becomes, the more confident the player. The more confident the player becomes, the more reliable the player will be. Training for finesse brings an extra energy system that makes talented players performs complex technique with ease. There are many techniques for training finesse. Most methods focus on specificity of each technique. Players can use these techniques alone or together in complex combinations. Some simple techniques are like immediate charging the ball and driving the hit through it. Intermediate techniques are like conceptually cracking your body like a whip. Complex techniques involve multiple interdependent movements and rotations. The achievement is power in finesse. An intermediate technique that involves your body cracking like a whip requires the performance to take place in predetermined sequence. In a spike approach at the moment of planting your jump, load your hips with your weight and swing your arms back. As you jump swing the arms upward and throw your hips forward. Pull your hitting shoulder and legs back so that you are like a loaded leaf spring. Unload by snapping forward through your body. Drop your non-hitting arm and use the abdominal muscles to pull your hitting shoulder and arm. Maintain the extension throughout your hitting arm and into your hand to create the whip-like effect. Snap your wrist on contact with the ball. Kick your legs forward into a pike to counter balance. Intermediate techniques require practice and training to become effective. It takes confidence to execute intermediate techniques to perform with finesse.
