SPORTS Whitney Zondor For anyone happy to don a funny-looking wetsuit in the middle of winter and climb into a half-frozen lake, an ideal sport exists. Kayak polo, a sport that is increasing in popularity internationally but remains largely unknown in the United States, offers the chance to compete against other die-hard athletes who see hypothermia as no big deal. Some call it canoe polo, even though only kayaks are used. Whatever it's called, the sport is always played in a still water pool or lake. The playing area is rectangular and goals are suspended six-and-a-half feet above the surface.

Extractions: Global Forum for Sports and Environment The Fundación Kayak (Kayak Foundation) is a non-profit organization whose aim is the development of people through sports and culture, and through respect, protection and restoration of the environment. (Report by José Juan de León y Madueño, President of Kayak Foundation). Through various environmental collaborations, the Kayak Foundation has developed links to a number of sports federations and is using sports attractive and dynamic aspects to raise awareness among participant and the general public-especially among young people-in line with the objectives of the Michezo programme*. In order to achieve its goals, the Kayak Foundation counts on the support of a successful athlete, David Cal Figueroa, an Olympic medallist in Athens, as a role model and proponent of how sport can exist in harmony with the environment. The main focus of the organizations activities is to bring in good environmental practices in all of the events organized in Spain and to fly the Ecoflag as a representative symbol of sustainable sport. The methodological plan followed at each event is based on an evaluation of the environmental impact that it causes, as well as the development of a strategic plan for minimizing these effects. Among the organizations activities in 2004 was a well publicized clean up of a 4km stretch of the Tajo river on 2 October. Working with the Madrileña Canoe Federation and the Aranjuez Canoe School, 50 volunteers in 25 kayaks removed 500kg of non-biodegradable material that was contaminating the river.

Extractions: All about kayak polo A SHORT HISTORY AND THE BASIC RULES OF CANOE POLO Kayak polo is a team sport, like a mixture of water polo and basketball, but played in kayaks. 5 players on each team battle on the court for 2 very intense 10 minute halves. Goals are approximately Six feet off the water and about Three x five feet in size. the game is an officially recognized discipline of USA Canoe/Kayak (USACK) and efforts are underway to have the sport included in the Olympic Games. Over Twenty-five nations took part in the last World Championships Players wear helmets with facemasks and PFDs (personal floatation devices) with increased chest, back, and kidney padding for personal protection. Players move the ball with either their hands or the paddle blade. Competitors move the ball by passing it to a team member, throwing it to the front of the boat and paddling to it (known as dribbling), or shooting it at the opponents goal. After getting possession of the ball, a player has 5 seconds before they must pass, dribble, or shoot the ball. During that 5 seconds, opposition paddlers will try to push over (known as a hand tackle), or ram into the ball handlers kayak (known as a kayak tackle) to force the thrower to lose control of the ball, or make an errant pass. This contact is only allowed on the person with the ball. Penalties are provided for any player who strikes (with their boat, body, or paddle) an opposition player who is not in possession of the ball.

Extractions: The game of canoe polo is played in kayaks, approximately 2.7 meter long, with rounded ends and rubber bumpers. The game can be played in a swimming pool, or on a lake or pond,(such as the pond near the Muskoseepi Pavilion that we played on this summer) The sport started in the UK where they don't draw much distinction between canoes and kayaks. "Canoeing" and "kayaking" are effectively synonyms for "paddling". In fact, what we call "canoes" they often call "Canadian canoes!". Technically it should be "kayak polo" but around the World, "Canoe Polo" is the name of the sport. The Wapiti Whitewater Kayakers are 3 time Canadian Champions in Canoe Polo. International Polo Link
